Great advice. It’s so easy (for me at least) to get caught up in wanting to get good and trying to imagine the future…instead of just enjoying the here and now.
Yeah, tell me about it. I don’t have any scientific studies to back this up, but I feel as though committing complex motions to muscle memory takes longer as one ages. And I strongly suspect that’s why many tricks are taking forever for me to really get down.
At this point I think I have to move Kwyjibo to second-tier practice status and move on to learning new tricks (as I did with Mondial) in order to keep my motivation high. My inability to get Kwyjibo down would kill my enthusiasm otherwise.
Yeah, Kwyjibo is a real pain.
@MoonageMin shared an awesome video with me on facebook recently that has really made Kwyjibo much easier to land.
I don’t know how to share the facebook video here on these forums. I can’t just copy/paste the link as it doesn’t work, and there’s no options to share the video outside of facebook.
So I downloaded it and uploaded it to my youtube account to share here…this is not my video and I have it as unlisted.
Hope it helps!!
Words to live (and throw) by! For my first year of yoyoing, I wasn’t a part of this community. The circles I ran in focused a lot more on “git gud” and posting trick circles, which is totally legit and all well and good (I get a lot of inspiration from trick circles on Insta etc) but it slowly became to the detriment of players like me who are in it more for casual throwing or collecting or toying with gear. So I’d get discouraged and frustrated when I would feel self conscious about posting about mail days or gear and instead see posts of people making in a week the same progress that took me months to achieve.
This community has been awesome for me because there are people here with whom I can discuss the collecting aspect or gear aspect but then there are also the trick circle/tutorial peeps who post tricks that inspire me when the urge hits me to try and learn something new. Also it’s refreshing to see people struggling with kwyjibo etc just like I am and not just people busting out MrMatio’s speed combos after like two weeks of grabbing a throw haha.
Sorry for the rant. I’ve just been thinking about this today and reflecting on the fact that I basically just throw to chill and relax and to collect/enjoy my collection, and I’m super happy the YYE Forum fam makes me feel welcome and good about interacting with the hobby in this way.
Dude that tutorial was super helpful! Sometimes when I land Kwyjibo’s second pop I notice that the string was more on my hand/wrist than my finger. I always thought that was wrong given the way the other tutorials I’ve seen present it (and I guess it’s technically wrong) but it’s really cool to see someone embrace it.
haha this use to frustrate me so badly when I was first into this hobby.
Same here! There’s been very little pressure here. I don’t feel like people look down on me or judge me here for not being at a certain skill level or whatever.
It’s just been a really fun place to hang. Lots of super nice people of all skill levels!
Same! Tbh that’s why I’ve been posting stuff like my mini painting over in the Out Of Topic section. This is such a good community that I kinda just like hanging here even if it’s not discussing jos.
I was having Butter withdrawals at work today.
Going to give my full thoughts soon but this thing is a gosh darn golly gee whiz beast.
It’ll be interesting to see if Gentry makes the Bi-metal Shutter his standard competition throw going forward.
I don’t see why he wouldn’t. His goal of showing you don’t need a premium priced yo-yo or even a metal to win has been achieved multiple times. At this point the competition is so high he should take whatever advantages he can. As a Shutter enthusiast I can 100% tell you the WC edition is more stable and powerful than the normal WA, and Gentry clearly felt he needed that. But even the WC edition is a significant downgrade compared to the Bimetal. And with the slight alteration to the shape to make it more V-like the width reduction isn’t as significant because the catch zone is more open.
I’m coming off of a year or so where I got kinda depressed about my lack of progress or skill compared to a lot of my yoyo friends (some of whom are now sponsored, etc.) However, after I got pushed up onto a stage by some new friends to do an impromptu freestyle, I got to realizing how much fun it still was.
A while later, I signed up for IL states on an impulse because I thought it would be just the thing to help me get back into it, and it totally worked. I haven’t even uploaded my finals music because I don’t think there’s a reasonable chance of me making it, but I’m OK with that, OK with where I’m at right now. I’ll have fun competing, talk to people I know and maybe make some more friends, spend some money on some yoyo’s, and just enjoy myself.
Yoyoing is whatever you make it.
General yoyo thought:
I really like the deep state, but I’d be interested to see how an A sized bearing deep state would play @da5id @The_Machinist. No pressure of course, just a “general yoyo thought”.
Pretty sure if they dont have the bearing for it, they won’t make it. Everything from here to the year 3000 will have their 10 Ball in it.
/has a sad
The thought of them always using the 10 ball flat bearing and nothing else fills me with joy!
So I’m not saying the bimetal Shutter is the best yo-yo of all time, but I’m not saying it isn’t either.
hehe
For real this thing slaps. It feels super premium too. At this point I don’t know how much I need the non-Shutter yo-yos in my collection. In a couple months if I haven’t started playing my other yo-yos more I might get rid of them.
That’s awesome to hear! I’m really happy that you’ve found a yo you enjoy so much!
Having a fun yo to throw around makes things so much more enjoyable!!
Yeah I posted in the signature yo-yo thread before the specs were announced that my ideal yo-yo would probably be ~55.5x46.5, 64.5gs. This is incredibly close to the Butter. The Breeze is listed as 55.66mm diameter and when i compared it side by side with the Butter the difference seems negligible. The 55mm Recog definitely feels noticeably smaller to me in play while the Butter and Breeze feel just right.
The Butter never feels wide or narrow or big or small to me in play. I love the Wide Angle and by no means does its width get in the way for me but it is noticeable. And the Recog is similar but in a different way, it definitely feels compact to me while throwing, even at 55x45.8, because I have big hands.
The Bimetal Shutter doesn’t elicit any of those thoughts while playing. It might actually be the perfect combo of specs and shape for me.
