What happened to all the modders? I haven’t seen any dyed Yoyos, hand painted, and hardly any custom ano or powder coated. I feel like custom colors and finishes on Yoyos has died out.
Modding was big when yo-yos were bad. Adding weight rings and doing things like recessing to a Freehand made it better. Now 30$ metals play better than almost anything that used to be available.
Japanese yoyo companies:
It’s still 2009 right? We like our yo-yos to be 42 mm wide.
Oh you want a wider yo-yo? Ok.
*makes a 52 mm wide yo-yo.
Clicks would be considered elements rather than tricks. And elements strung together in a “meaningful” manner is a trick or combo.
I know there’s somewhere you can look up what constitutes a click if you want a “formal” definition of a competition element
There are elements. Then there are “tricks and combos,” which to me are mostly synonymous.
I like elements to help me make tricks/combos. In fact, elements are #1 in my book, and give the most enjoyment exploring how I can use in a trick/combo.
Casual Tutorials is really on to this idea, and although Jacob stopped making them, he opened a lot of peoples eyes on what to do from a single mount or “element.”
Another word for elements might be “moves.” Combos are comprised of moves.
BTW I’m not all that great at yo-yoing. Some of the simple stuff I do looks ok, but I am fully aware of what’s out there, and what I will never achieve. I do try to make it flow, and see a strong rhythmic component to it.
This does beg the question are Eli hops a move or a trick. It all comes down to perspective. A single chord on a piano is not a song, but a sequence of chords may be.
Lastly, what is a trick may be vague, but elements are definitely not.
And it doesn’t really matter
Starting to get to the point where I can get a good idea of how a yo-yo plays just by looking at the design and specs. Hopefully this saves me from regretting purchases in the future.
I get this, and I’m totally with you; but I’ve been humbly surprised by designs that I thought I wouldn’t like. Case in point — didn’t think I’d like the iYoyoy 2 at all, but I actually really enjoy it a lot.
But generally, I’m with you. I’m kind of out of the “lust for yoyos” and FOMO phase in my yoyo journey. So the only ones on my radar are ones that I can safely bet that I will like; based on specs and general community consensus.
General yoyo thought for the day:
Brace yourself, this is gushing with gratitude.
I really really appreciate @matio’s tutorials. They are such high quality — excellent lighting, visibility, angles and color contrast! I love that he doesn’t speak during them, and he takes the time to cover each step as clearly as possible. His YT channel is a treasure trove of some of the best intermediate/ advanced tutorials available on the web — hands down.
I have learned some of my most played tricks from his videos! Thanks @matio!
I agree 100% on this. I wish someone like the IYYF or something like that could grant a prize or recognition to Matio for his invaluable work towards the worldwide community. He’s lowkey one of the most influential people of the community.
Yeah definitely the best tutorials. A lot of the verbal explanation tutorials have poor angles and don’t do a great job explaining what you’re supposed to be doing.
Matio is incredibly clear with the angles and hand movements he does
100% agree. His tutorials are So fantastic and have allowed me to progress so much farther than I otherwise would have been able to.
If you like the iyoyo2 and Top Deck I can pretty much guarantee you’ll like the Hidra and Firrox too!
As much as I love the One Drop VTWO (my favorite throw overall), I’ve think I’ve decided that my holy grail yoyo would be an AMS-coated titanium Top Deck, preferably designed to have the same weight and weight distribution as the alu version.
Totally agree. Those are my favorite tutorials. He deserves more recognition
He has a tutorial called “Simple Yoyo Chopsticks tutorial”, and having watched it, I am left to wonder which part of the title the word simple is meant to refer to.
I have a Hydra also! I’d play it more if it had a quieter bearing in it.
At the risk of bringing some drama, what’s the deal with Blaise Becker?
It looks like he was on 2Sick at some point but is now just unsponsored. I saw a vague post on his Instagram about maturing and become more respectable and responsible.
Anyone got any info?
He was on unparalleled for a bit after that too. Really good kid, idk if there is any real reason, although im probably wrong because i dont follow yoyo drama
He was talking about retiring from yoyo completely a while ago. I think he went like a month without posting or competing or anything. He was talking about how yoyo took away time he could have spent playing sports more seriously (?) thing which i found a little bit silly tho. He’s very good (like really good) at yoyoing and it’s not like anyone is stopping him from doing what he wants. He was in 2Sick and then in UNPRLD but i think he’s unsponsored now.
