My cousin was wanting to try yoyoing, and so I decided to just give him a yoyo instead of his Mom buying him one. I really really do not like the Arrow, so it’s better with someone who can appreciate it more than me, and introduce them to the hobby. Gave them a YYF paper manual for tricks, and some string, I hope he sticks at it.
Who else has done something like this, and are they still throwing today?
I’ve given away quite a few. I actually buy yoyos specifically to give away. Kids mostly. I never seem to have any with me to give away when I met an adult interested.
I maybe put too much energy into thinking about this, but this was a topic I made about it. TLDR: yyf whip, or a butterfly XT is the best imo. Butterfly XT I can find easier (targets in the US), and it has a greased/heavily lined full size c bearing so they stay responsive a little longer than the whip. The whip is a close second, being a little more durable and it has protruding response pads that grab/snag the string. The bearing runs out of lube a little sooner though. I try to have 2 yo-yos that are opened and ready to hand out. It starts out as me putting one on the finger, and handing the identical one to the person to try out. If they seem to like it, I offer them the yoyo. If it doesn’t seem like a good fit for them, I don’t force it on them.
I was able to get 2x YYF Replay (not Pro) and 2x YYF black carrying strap on eBay for under $20 shipped. I mailed the second Replay to my homie, who expressed an interest in throwing after one of his kids got the yo-yo badge from Scouts. Kindness feels good to give (and receive).
i starting yoyoing with my older brother as kids, as adults i got back into it and in an attempt to get my brother back into it i sent him my MYY hertz and Z01 focus. Unfortunately he has not really gotten back into it as I had hoped lol.
In grad school, my advisor’s son always would come to the lab to play with me after he got out of school. Little dude was like 8. He saw me throwing and next thing you know he came barging in one afternoon with a yoyo and was hooked. The day after my thesis defense, I drove over to their house and gave him my most expensive bi-metal to celebrate. Years later my old advisor sent me a picture of a now teenager still throwing it.
I gave my girlfriend’s cousin a box of yo-yos and information after he showed interest and had something super basic.
also, I used to do newbie boxes. I’d buy a bunch of super common inexpensive yo-yos off bsts and if I didn’t care for them I’d create boxes and send them to people just getting into the hobby.
I had a couple of people help me out earlier on, so I try to pass it forward.
