Returning oldie Intro story & 200+ yoyo collection

Hi all! :waving_hand: This intro may be a little late. I’ve already been actively buying here for a few months, so some of you may recognize me.

I started yo-yoing around 2005, when YoYoJam was my gateway into the hobby. Back then, I could only drool over SPYY, Anti-Yo, and ILYY. They were hard to find where I lived and far beyond my teenage budget. As a small-town kid with an unusual hobby, I became a bit of a local curiosity. I even appeared in a local newspaper and performed at events and parties for very little pay, all of which, naturally went toward more yoyos.

Around 2015, life happened and I gradually drifted away. The competitive scene began to feel repetitive. And I missed the excitement of waiting for each year’s WYYC videos to see someone revealing something I never knew was possible. John Ando’s 2008 freestyle is still my all-time favorite.

I also started hanging out with the “wrong crowd”, the kind who thought yoyo wasn’t cool. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: By then, I had collected more than 100 yoyos, with Japanese high-ends being my main thing. I packed them into cases and stored them at the bottom of my wardrobe. Thankfully, I never sold them, although most of the boxes disappeared through several moves.

Fast-forward to 2026. I’m married, life has moved on, and one weekend I was spring-cleaning when I rediscovered those forgotten cases. The moment I opened them, years of memories came rushing back :sparkles: I picked up my Anglam, my favorite from back then. And discovered that my muscle memory hadn’t abandoned me. I could still run through Hiroyuki’s speed combo flawlessly. My wife was surprised, not only by the skill, but also by what she thinks an insane number of yoyos for one person to own.

That weekend, I did a ton of research into the modern yoyo world, and did a shopping spree to update my collection. My first instinct was to log into YoyoNation, only to find that it no longer existed. That eventually brought me to the YoyoExpert forum.

3 months later, my collection had grown from 100+ to more than 200  My wife is not happy about the pace, but she has been wonderfully supportive. One day she said, “It’s such a waste to keep all these yoyos hidden in random cases. Let’s build something to organize them!” We initially considered a transparent wall display, but displaying 200 yoyos would require a wall we simply don’t have. So, we built this custom storage system using modular stackable drawers and foam inserts:

20 years after I first picked up a YoyoJam, I feel like that excited small-town kid again, only now I can finally own the yoyos I once dreamed about. I’m glad to have found this community, and I look forward to sharing the next chapter of the collection with all of you :heart_hands:

Great story! One of the things I love about yoyoing is that you always find your way back, even after falling off of it for awhile, even if you’re not expecting it. Has been true for myself and so many others.

Now let’s see some pics of these things :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

That is so true! I had thought it was going to be one of those childhood things. Turns out it’s a life-long hobby.

Still waiting on a lot of yoyos on their way to me. Once I have everything, I’ll post the whole lot :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Glad your wife now seems to at least somewhat be supportive of your rediscovered hobby.

Just in case, she decides to reverse her support and you find her measuring you for a straight jacket… I have a couple images and a short description of the images that you can show your wife.

I’m not saying the images or the story will help justify your current trend of increasing your yo-yo collection. But at least it will give your wife perspective on what she perceives is maybe too many and what she can see in the images as being way outside the point that you couldn’t see with a Hubble telescope, lol

In one of the images it’s obvious there are several hundred yo-yos in cases and on that table. To the right of the table are those several stacked totes, all filled with yo-yos. To the right of those four totes are four more totes… Also filled with yo-yos.

The other image is of the other side of the room. Those 4 file cabinets… Each has four pullout drawers that are all filled with yo-yos.

That adds up to approximately 1300 yo-yos at the newer house.

At the old house, I have approximately 200 yo-yos thereabouts.

So some total is approximately between 15 and 1600 yo-yos.

Tell your wife that I photograph well in a straight jacket… But normally don’t wear one because it’s tougher than I thought to eat a double cheeseburger when my hands are not available.

Actually, in all honesty, I don’t consider myself crazy at all. But there is an old saying that a picture is worth 10,000 words. So in those two images, I could probably come up with a 20,000 word story and not even give a reasonable or logical reason why one person should have so many yo-yos, lol

Anyways, if your wife is supportive at all, that is a good thing. As long as you don’t financially, put yourself in a bind because you’re a little too enthusiastic in your yoyo purchasing program, I think you’re good. You didn’t ask for my advice… But I will give you free unsolicited advice. Nobody counts your money better than you. Don’t put yourself in a hole. I have no hesitation in saying that for whatever reason I woke up in the morning and I only had a couple hundred yo-yo’s left, I would still be fine with that, lol.

The image of the yo-yo table and the cases does not represent the final display position of the yo-yos. Since they are in a three level house that I purchased next-door, when my neighbor decided to move to Thailand, we are restoring and upgrading various sections of the house so basically that room is partially and temporarily used as storage, while we are dealing with projects that are obviously more important than how I display a ton of yo-yos, lol

I have no doubt that I could cover all four walls of that room with yo-yos. Do I want to do? Do I have to? Should I display every single yo-yo? I haven’t figured that out yet, lol.

Your file cabinet looks pretty sweet.

The good thing about this forum is that I can always come here to reassure myself that I don’t have a problem. There are way more lunatics with way more unreasonable amount of yoyos than I do.

Hey welcome, glad to have you here, and ever more so that youre back to yoyos!

Im very new here and to the hobby, but this community is phenomenal. Ive never encountered an online group half as kind and welcoming as this one. Definitely recommend you try to be active on here, even if its just liking posts and short responses. There really is a sense of community here and its awesome to see and be a small part of.

Also, Im impressed, and honestly a little jealous, at the rate youve been buying up new yoyos since returning.

Like I said im new to this, and ive been here since the middle of June. In that month and a half I’ve aquired 20 or so yoyos, with a handful more in the mail on their way here.

And i thought I was on a shopping spree, but you, my new friend, blow me out of the water. I aspire to up my game to your level lol

Seriously, if yoy have the disposable income and it makes you happy, i see absolutely no problem with buying more yoyos. And obviously both of those things are true for you. More powrr to ya i say.

Once again, welcome!

It’s one of those yoyos from “obscure” manufacturer I bought back then. The colorway caught my eye.

When I came back from my hiatus, I didn’t realize G2 has now acquired a cult following.
