Hey I’m new to yoyoing and have been yoyoing for around 1 month now. I have a big issue and that is I dont know what yoyo to use know that I have like 5. I have the Shutter original, magicyoyo v12, magic yoyo y03 hertz and the skill addicts beginner yo-yo. I really just want one yoyo I can row and progress with. Many ppl on Reddit have said go for the shutter but I myself I’m not a huge fan of it. I really like the skill addicts beginner yo-yo(unresponsive) but it doesn’t have a huge/long spin time. My brain keeps saying I need a really good yoyo that can go godspeed and is professional even though I’m not even there. What would you guys recommend me to do? Shall I just get a really good monometal like the ace gravity 8 and use that or is there a yoyo in my collection that is good? I see so many ppl on Reddit too saying “How they’ve used the same yoyo for months and they’re now treating themselves with somma different”. IVE BOUGHT 5 YOYOS IN 4 WEEKS
. Someone help me please. What would you suggest me to do? Also is the V12 good enough for those super advanced tricks or do you think the skill addicts beginner yo-yo is gold? I like the V12 too but many ppl just say it’s cheap and not that good. Please tell me what yoyo to use/buy for the final time.
V12 is solid and my favorite of the bunch you have, but honestly at this point its a question of finding something that is going to make you want to throw. The throws you have are perfectly capable. Cheap≠bad, and for the price, the v12 is a darn good yoyo.
That being said, if you want to buy more, and can afford it, there are a ton of fun and different throws on the market
Look at what you have. What do you like about them? The shape? The feel? How they perform? Shoot, how about the color? It’s true there are a gazillion yoyos to choose from, but building criteria for what you want in a yoyo (and a budget, of course) will help determine your next purchase.
Also, do not feel a rush to buy a new yoyo. Very few yoyos are objectively bad. Try to find your favorite in your collection and use it to learn more tricks. A good yoyo does help you progress, but a good yoyo does not make a pro. Try to learn more tricks instead of listening to “wisdom” on places like Reddit
Practice practice practice. Get a higher end yoyo when your skills are higher end ![]()
there is an almost zero chance that your yoyo will hold you back. 99.999% of your first year will be skill issues. you have to get comfortable with a yoyo like you’re using a pencil. build the muscle memory. if you don’t like the shutter or you like something more, play what you like. it’s just a toy, pick one you like. the most important thing right now will be consistency. don’t look at it like practice, but play 30 min a day and you’ll see amazing gains with whatever yoyo you decide to use
tldr: if you ever reach a point where your yoyo is the problem holding you back, you will be experienced enough at that point to know exactly what you need to fix it
good luck, ask lots of questions, but most importantly, and i can’t stress this enough, find the gear and tricks that make you happy. if you’re having fun, it doesn’t matter what anyone else says or does
Facts, Tom. The first 12 months are when you are also discovering your tastes. After a year of throwing I only had 6 yoyos total. And then I had a vague idea of not just the kind of yoyos I liked, but also the kinds of tricks I liked. Anything worthwhile takes time, far more than money. Believe me when I say that the best kind of investment you can make for a hobby like this is time.
Just got the V12 today in black and blue and I love it, just scared to use it as I stripped the first one by mistake. Idk I’m kinda scared to use it as I don’t wanna mess it up. In really loving the skill addicts clear yoyo but unfortunately it doesn’t spin long(ppl say) and it’s not good for complex tricks?
Tbh they all wanna make me throw but I enjoy using the skill addicts beginner yo-yo alot(it’s just not the best yoyo ig according to Reddit and other sources) because it’s plastic and heavier to me then my shutter its spin time is not the best but idk I enjoy the feel of the yo-yo alot
Do you have a favorite thrower?
Lemme tell you what I told another, dings and scuffs are a part of learning. One of my first yoyos was a Throwback Summer Solstice. By the time I gave it away to a kid so he could learn how to throw, I had it for over 18 months. It was very dinged up from me dropping it on asphalt or throwing it too low. It still spun fine. Some will even go as far as to call dings “personality marks,” making the yoyo truly yours. Of course, try to avoid dinging it, but it’s not the end of the world when you do.
About plastic, it is inherently less dense than metal, so on average it does have less power than metal. That in no way means you can’t learn tricks or do long combos on a plastic. One of my all time favorite yoyos is plastic. Plastic is also (in some ways) more durable than metal. You can drop it and ding it without breaking a sweat over it. And sometimes for me, it’s actually refreshing to pick up a plastic after throwing metal a bunch. Plastic feels inherently different than metal in play, and I love it! Keep your plastic! You won’t regret it!
Many of exactly the right points have been expressed here. Try not to get locked into the idea that a better yo-yo will make you a better player. It’s just not the facts. The idea is to find the one you really like the feel of but will also give you spin and stability to help you advance. The idea in your head should be: I need practice to get better, practice takes time, so I need a yo-yo I really enjoy throwing, one that puts a smile on my face every time I throw it. You will find it and to some degree we can help. Finding that throw will make you want to throw and you’ll enjoy it. As a result you’ll throw more and voila… practice happens while you’re having fun. So you said you’re drawn to the Skill Addicts Beginner’s Yo-yo. What do you like about it?
Idk it’s just a plastic yoyo tree hat looks and feels nice. It’s spin time isn’t the best but I still enjoy using it. Ais it’s nice and curved no steep edges I do love the V12 too it’s just that I don’t wanna use a yo-yo that I won’t be able to progress with or a yo-yo that won’t do me justice
You will be able to progress perfectly fine with any of the yoyos you have, so don’t worry about that.
Reddit is notorious for being competition oriented, and while a comp yoyo might make thongs easier, it wont magically transform your ability
Maybe try out skill addicts bimetal or banger yoyo. They are both budget bimetals and will help your practice a lot. However, if you are still a beginner, shutter will help a lot as well. Monometals are also more durable than bimetals as there are no rims to shift. In my first year, I had a shutter which was good and now I realise your skill level makes a lot of difference in your playing rather than a yoyo would.
