Neat; I should have just tried it with a yoyo that could tighten up that much and I would have seen that those little rings could do the trick. Awesome.
The video essay idea was pretty cool, but it should have “throwing a yoyo footage” (not necessarily, “having good skills”) as a high percentage component. Nobody wants to watch someone like me talk at the camera.
For the record, I have already thrown non-fixed-axle a bit. I have a colleague that throws, and to keep the “yoyo club” momentum going, we’ve exchanged tricks a few times. For the most part, I think I would CHOOSE to play the Baldwin most times anyhow. I’m having nutty fun just trying to get various stall combinations consistent. Haven’t had this much fun with a yoyo since I first started doing trapezes with “hopping in the air” returns (whatever those are called).
So it would be worth clarifying if entrants must have been throwing strictly fixed-axle (naturally the only “check” for this would be the honor system… just take entrants at their word) for the month, or if it’s more that (like me) they have taken the opportunity to make fixed-axle a strong component of their daily play.
Ok. Got my Baldwin. Also got a BC Rainbow and a 3 in 1 No Jive. Mostly because I had no idea what I was getting into and mostly because they look cool. 8)
But there’s no way I’m doing a video. I was working on throwing a trapeze into his brother, popped out into a bind. And the yoyo is darn near dead. Am I on the right track? The wrong track? The videos look like they can get a much longer spin.
BTW, all 3 of these throws are really smooth to play with. It’s fun throwing a yoyo that’s darn near silent.
(which also includes stall theory and other examples), and then although he doesn’t demonstrate it, it becomes obvious that if you throw out the other direction, you can catch it in a brother stall. And back and forth.
Best fixed-axle combo I’ve done so far was 3 stalls: trapeze to brother to … “chopstick”? Not sure if that’s the acceptable name… if it had come in from Shoot the Moon it would have been a “lunar landing” I guess… from the breakaway I don’t know.
Thanks, Greg.
That was really helpful. I didn’t realize the yoyo was already partially wound up before landing on the string. Now I see what I’m doing wrong. And then to throw the regen in there…
I know what I’ll be doing the next week. Thanks again!
That’s what we had in mind Greg. You don’t have to talk. Text works. Body language. Photos. Hand puppets. Whatever you like.
We could have done a straight video contest, but then it would be more about skill than sharing something that can be meaningful without great yoyo skill. I love watching talented throwers and they’re welcome to bring their best to this contest (we all want to see it, right?) but we wanted to make it inclusive and make a chance for anyone to win.
We don’t care if your best trick is Rock the Baby. Personally, I don’t care if there are any tricks at all in your video. That just gave me an idea…
Let me get with frodoslair on something and I’ll get back to you…
Also, MikeEff, that’s exactly what we had in mind with our little contest. It’s more about the journey. Hearing about your spin time frustrations and then learning about stalls…well, that’s exactly what we want to hear. It’s about learning and sharing your experiences.
The parts of the prize that are currently in South Africa have been boxed and will be shipped to the USA on Monday…
I did it! ;D
I did a breakaway into a trapeze stall (the yoyo bit my finger around 10 times before I got it). Then I regen’d back out and the yoyo returned to my hand. I let out a “YEAH!” that was so loud, my cats ran out of the house. I got it like 3 more times, but not consistently. I can’t seem to regen into a brother stall, though.
Not yet…
Waylon and Frodoslair, if you want, THIS can be my entry.
I’m not really in it for the contests. But, the feeling I got when I landed it, that was a pretty good prize.
