Favorite methods of ding protection

But… but…
It won’t feel the same :sob::sob:

not yo-yoing?
not trying to be coy, but it’s kinda like wanting to skate but not wanting to scrape your palms & knees. i think you HAVE to accept your dings - not to view them as a badge of honor or stoicism, but certainly neither to regret them or see them as a loss or defeat. the world is full of hard, sharp things. it will break your dreams and your toys. but that’s also why it’s so important to go out into it and PLAY.

Now that’s an interpretation of dings I can get behind. I like my things I spend money on and find it nuts to intentionally mar them. That being said I accept that it may happen accidentally.

As for the OP’s question… play with your yoyos over surfaces that are softer than the yoyo.

Ding protection is a state of mind. I accept that by throwing a yoyo, I’m likely to damage it, so I’ve made peace with it.

Or I just buy two of the same yoyo.

I present to you, the most obnoxious thing you’ll see today.

Yoyo preservatives.

For real tho. My methods are:

  1. Shorten your string.
  2. Don’t suck.

Unfortunately i don’t always don’t suck so, accidental dings or dings that happen becuase i’m trying new stuff are fine in my book. I don’t think too much about them.

That is so true! And that’s why you should choose yo-yos made from strong resilient materials like metal … to best fight off the perils of the world and show that ever-lovin’ world, like Twisted Sister, you’re not gonna take it… no, you ain’t gonna take it!

I’m sure those don’t cause massive vibe…

I get the “it’s a toy so treat it like one” logic, and I definitely agree for the majority of throws. I have my beaters that I can toss anywhere and not really worry about. But when you’re talking about a toy that is not only very expensive, but also very special to you, then I also think it’s fine to want to keep it in the best condition possible.

I’ve personally found that being extra careful with a yoyo actually makes me a better and more precise player. It’s not like I’m going to freak out and cry myself to sleep if I ding my best yoyo, but I’m also going to do everything I can to make sure I don’t.

I practice in the back yard. Lots of nice grassy area. Nothing to hit.

My more expensive stuff I tend to just keep at home. Other than that, not much you can do; dings happen.

Protect dings? I had no idea dings were an endangered species!

Actually I find the best way to prevent dings is to just play my yoyo without worrying about dinging it. There seems to be some sub rule karma, or something else, that if I think about dinging the yo, I will.

The two biggest ding causes for me are a string that’s slightly longer than normal and my wedding band. I won’t put a yoyo I don’t want beat on my yoyo holder either. The rivets on my pants kills them. Some go in my pocket. I don’t like dings on my yo-yos but I also don’t fret about it. The only ones I have that aren’t dinged are the few I’ve got in the past few weeks and haven’t had time to play. To each their own with condition. If you only wanna play over carpet good on you. If you want to intentionally walk the dog on concrete, more power to you.

If you really want to keep your yoyo in mint condition and still play a lot with it, you should buy an cheap headphone with foam earcups like these.

( this one is damaged and I lost my other one, but this is how it should look like)
just fold it over your yoyo like this:

you should cut a little bit off the sides of the part that folds over your yoyo.
this protects your yoyo form damage if you bump it at a wall, but if you play outside or above tiles it will still damage a little bit.
I would not recommend this trick, because it can affect play abillity.
works the best on wide yoyos.

OP, I’m right there with you. Hate dings, and took awhile for me to accept that dings are gonna happen.

So any throw I want to try and keep mint/NMTBS, I’ll only throw indoors. I don’t have carpet so I still have to be careful but laminate flooring doesn’t seem to do much damage on the rare occasion I do make contact with the floor lol. Seems to just bounce lol.

I also have a few designated beaters I take if I’m gonna be throwing outside/while traveling. B-grades are excellent for that. I have a dinged TopYo Impulse II for when I’m throwing over concrete, and I’ll usually take my b-grade Aluminum Dream or b-grade ND, or something equally expendable/replaceable that I still enjoy like my Hotdiggity or Shutter.

Edit (forgot to actually type something lol): probably the best ding-related advice I’ve ever seen/received.

When you first get a yoyo in the mail, take a hammer and give it some dings. If you ding it enough then you won’t be able to tell when a new ding is added.

-Warning-
This method may result in more dings

You can’t ding your yo-yo, if you don’t play with it

Nah, I have to way to protect my yo-yos. Don’t really care for 80% of them. But I do have very fast reflexes so I would bring my hand up super quickly if it’s about I hit the floor

Lmao G2Jake did something to that effect to get more people to throw Banshees I guess. He gave some Banshees to his kid and let him throw it onto their concrete patio, then sold them for super cheap. Won’t notice more dings if you’re already dinged!

Right? I don’t think there is a problem with wanting to take care of something you spent money on.
