Entering a 1A Ladder Division as an uber n00b

Congratulations on completing your first competition! The trick ladder is no joke, and being able to execute it under scrutiny is something that even players with years of experience would probably find challenging.

I’ve always wanted to visit England. It’s sorta bucket list for me. It would be a real shame if I had to come all that way just to slap the #!&$@? out of a stranger. You didn’t disappoint ANYONE. Not even yourself! Guy, you entered this thing as a newb, PRACTICED YOUR HEINEY OFF, learned a BUNCH of new tricks, posted videos, inspired people around the world, AND I bet you had a tasty lunch to boot.

You didn’t disappoint anyone. You inspired us.

Major props to you for competing! Next time it’ll be easier to land stuff that you know with all those folks watching.

There’s nothing disappointing about putting yourself out there!

Dude, you didn’t disappoint me at all!
haha…no way! Just the fact that you gave it a go in the first place is awesome! And you worked so hard! It’s a bummer for sure…but even still Im proud as hell of you man!
It’s been such a pleasure for me to watch you progress over these past few weeks! And you’ve come so far!
Look at how good you are with Kwyjibo! (I’m very jealous of your Kwyjs! lol)…or with boingy-boing (I know you’re hard on yourself and get frustrated on this one…seriously though man, once you get them going they look so good!).
And you don’t give up! You keep pushing on!

Nah man. I’m not disappointed! I’'m still proud as hell of you!!
Besides…it was super nice of you to let the kid win! He’ll never forget this!

You rock man!

What you’ve done is actually pretty impressive. A lot of people who get into this hobby doesnt even think of joining competitions. And nothing is wrong with that also. But that is what’s good about this hobby - whether you do well or not, there’s going to be a lot of people who are going to be here to cheer you on and support you.

Much kudos to you for stepping out of your comfort zone and inspiring a lot of people, including me

I remember this video when Ryuichi Nakamura failed in the 2018 World Yoyo, when his yoyo snagged a few times for some reason. And this is after he has worked so hard practicing all year long prior to the competition. This event we know is cut-throat competitive, but when someone fails this miserably, you start to hear the crowd, including the other competitors cheering him up.

Props for giving it a go and sharing your journey. It’s a bummer that you didn’t get to go further and complete all of the other tricks you know. I know that feeling. Still, you went for it instead of sitting home which gets my respect.

Contests can be very stressful, I’ve never done well lol. Don’t worry about it and be ready for next time.
It’s very cool that you tried!

Thank you @ryanmcg, @Mystik, @pmdon, @Avvatar, @MarkD, @Genki, @MattB, @MoosaK, @PCaliyoyos, @Nathan and everyone else for all your encouragement and support!

I have no regrets and personally, I wasn’t disappointed (just a little shame I couldn’t complete some of the other tricks I practised).

I got back home from the contest and afterparty at 2 am, so only an hour ago, and I had an amazing time at the contest, not only was the contest itself fantastic to watch, and to participate in, but what made it super awesome was meeting everyone there and spending time just chatting about yoyos and playing yoyos all day long with all the lovely people.

Had an amazing day!

Took a photo together with the amazing Luna Harran, and the current 1A national champion of Spain, Gemma Planell! Just two of the many many more amazing people I got to meet today.

Also I got to try out a lot of cool yoyos and have got to understand my preferences a lot better.
I think I like yoyos that has a heavier feeling on the string and not too wide.

I don’t want to take anything away from the winner and this was definitely not the reason I lost, so with the risk of sounding like a sore loser, I am glad I didn’t win in hindsight. Dom, my competition more than deserved to win, but had I done so, on hindsight I would have felt really bad winning against a young man when there were just two of us.
Besides, not winning means I can enter again, and winning the trick ladder at the UK Nationals has more of a ring to it. :grinning:
Now that I have experienced the nerves, and I get more time to practice, next mission, complete all 25 tricks and win at the UK Nationals!!

Video of my trick ladder, I haven’t even watched this back yet either…

Oh! and I got to spark a Titanium yoyo for the first time today. (a G2 TiShee) :star_struck:

And I didn’t come back empty handed!

UK Nationals 2020 (trick ladder) better watch out! I will be there to win it this time!

Man, I’m so glad you got to meet a bunch of cool people, throw a ton of new throws and had a great time!

I’m not disappointed a single it in you…but I do feel a bit bad cause damn you put a lot of work, heart and soul into this. :frowning:
UK Nations isn’t even going to know what hit them by the time you storm through though!!

haha I LOVE that you added your whistle to the Elevator at the event! lmao  that was great!!

Also, I LOVE Airetic strings! @TheThrowingGnome was super cool in gifting me some a couple
of months back.

:fist_right::boom::fist_left:
You rock man! :love_you_gesture:

Well done to you man. I know it’s not the result you we’re aiming for but it takes a lot to perform anything in front of an unfamiliar audience.

Only good things can be taken from your experience and next time you do it you’ll be glad you gave it a go the first time.

Much respect for you and anyone who gets up on a stage.

You didn’t disappoint anyone. I’ve often said when I get in front if the judges, it feels like I’m trying to do my tricks wearing ice hockey gloves and a gauze blindfold. You got out there, competed and hopefully had a great time!

So, I won the YYF HubStack AfterGlow at this British YoYo Association’s 2019 Southern Regional Contest this weekend, but it is surplus to my needs.

This has gone up for sale up until I meet anyone who wants to learn how to yoyo.

At which point I’ll be gifting this to the first person who approaches me yoyoing in public, shows genuine interest and asks me what they should buy to get started in the hobby.
When that happens I plan on saying, here you go this is for you, take some extra strings too, go and enjoy and spread the love.

It will remain on sale until then, whichever happens first.
