Does anyone have any tips or tricks for learning Spirit Bomb?

Can’t figure spirit bomb out. Still stuck on the first hop.

Can’t do tsunami bomb either :frowning:

I’ve only gotten to the wrist mount in tsunami bomb once. Can’t seem to hit the right string on the first underpass part. Youre supposed to land on the string coming from the base of throw hand thumb? But it’s angled? I don’t get it.

Feeling like i hit a brick wall in this yoyo thing.

It is a pretty tough one to start with. You can always come back to it later. Do you know how to do a kwyjibo? It has the fundamentals of doing a hop, crossing the arms and landing on the string.

What typically goes wrong? Is it that you’re missing the string?

Edit:

For tsunami bomb, make sure you don’t let the string go all the way back behind the hand like keep it in front of the knuckles. You can also point a bit towards the inside of your body and that will keep the strings lined up. That should work and just drop the string and repeat that single element to get comfortable with it. The next element is like a magic drop. Try not to over think it. Simply roll the Yoyo around and the string will pop off.

For the first hop of spirit bomb, just pay attention to how you miss like does the Yoyo fall forward? Then try again and over compensate by the crossed over top hand forward. The second hop is very similar to kwijibo in that you pass through the string, so it would be a good trick to get very comfortable with first.

In general, I think grinding one trick you can’t land for extended periods of time can be very unproductive for progress and I highly suggest going on yoyorewinds youtube and checking out all the short tutorials for something that looks really simple and trying it. I really like learning easier tricks that still look cool and have cool new yocabulary, even if they aren’t super challenging. That has been a great way for me to stay motivated and excited to play Yoyo. Pushing something that’s giving you problems can be great but also can be an easy way to get burned out. I wish you the best and if you want more help or have any other specific questions, ask them yo!

Nah man, it’s not a wall, it’s just a step that seems a bit high at the moment. Trust me, it took me almost a year to actually figure out how to spirit bomb. It drove me crazy and I had no idea why everyone was able to do it but me. You will 100% get it in time.

I can do kwijibo every time. It took me a minute but I figured it out. I think what’s throwing me off is keeping the yoyo inside the strings on SB. Kwijibo you don’t have a ceiling if that makes sense.

@GTDropKnot thanks for the video and tips. Not overly angling that string will help me I think. I’m just using ■■■■■■■■■■ app with the videos right now. I need to check out more videos because theirs aren’t always super helpful. I just like convenience of the app. I should practice other things like hook and whips too. I struggle with those (i think I’m keeping too much string tension)

@GnarlyCharlie thanks for the encouragement. I’m sure I’ll get it eventually.

Yeah like that app is great. I just recommend checking out rewinds tutorials on YouTube because there are a ton of them and they’re explained pretty well imo. Idk I just get worried that you’re closing in on burn out and really do think learning something fun and easier might help. No rules and I don’t wanna preach or push anything too much but just like share my own experience.

Also there’s no need to work on hooks and stuff if you don’t want to like no tricks are necessary really. I like working of the tricks I think are fun, feel good, look cool personally. Hooks for me fall into the few good category so I like some of them. They’re satisfying imo

I do think it is a good habit to always maintain neutral string tension. Once you get used to adjusting it all the time, you stop thinking about it and it stops being an annoying chore.

i second everything @GTDropKnot said, esp the part about how good rewind’s tutorials are. for me, each time i learn something new i watch a tutorial on yye, ■■■■■■■■■■, and rewind. they all have different angles, explainations, and tips. no one source has been everything for me impe.

also, what he said about learning something else and circling back is super solid advice from a psychological pov. i had a few tricks that were fighting me and i put them down for like a month. when i came back to them i nailed em in a couple of days

I’m gna hop in here (no pun intended) and triple what Henry and Thomas said, particularly about taking a break from a trick that’s giving u too much trouble and learning something fun.

I think it’s important to remember what made u fall in the love with the hobby, usually its landing a trick of some sort and the awesome feeling that comes with it. That satisfaction and accomplishment, feeling of progress, these things are super important ive found. And whenever u come to a spot where u haven’t felt any of those in a while you start doubting if the hobby is really for u after all. Maybe ur not as good as u thought u could be with this, self doubt creeps in and can easily take over and linger. This is especially something to watch out for when a tricks got u stumped. It’s natural to want to finish a trick that’s difficult, not finishing it can feel like ur giving up and that’s also not a good feeling. But yo-yoing isn’t like other things where u have to finish an assisgned task in order to move on to the next one. Quite the opposite most times when I get stumped I’ll leave it alone for a bit and find another trick to work on, it’s important to find something that’s more easily in your reach and can be learned relatively easily or quick and there’s no shortage of tricks like that. So definitely try out other stuff and never linger on one trick too long. If you hit a few tricks in row that ur not able to get down right away, go back and think of all the tricks you’ve already learned, and start going thru and doing them all, then start combining them in succession and turning them into combos, that can be a super fun excerise cuz personally, doing a combo of tricks u already for the first time is even more satisfying then learning one specific trick or it can be for me anyway. But back to what both of the guys above said everytime I stay away from a trick for a few days, it’s really insane one day you’ll randomly come back to it and try it and it’ll just click for u. And I know that sounds like it can’t be real or won’t be like that for u, cuz that’s what I thought the first time I saw someone mention that…. Until it happened to me. Then it happened again and again. And I realized that’s like a real thing in Yoyo. There’s something going on there I can’t explain the more u Yoyo the more u keep practicing new things, new elements, combining ur tricks. Then you’re increasing ur chances of this happening more often. Practice the hell out of a trick, then forget about for a couple days. Then come back again after you’ve learned something new. And see what happens. And if u still don’t get it, u probably won’t. But one day you’ll come back and you will get it. And that’s one of the best feelings. So don’t sleep on that tip.

I watched this video a million times and then i saw the strings and i was keeping one to the side for some reason. I don’t know how to explain it. It’s a double, not one and on the side. I think?

Well i did it that way and landed it first time. Then typed this lol

Let’s see if i can keep it going and move on. I really want to get this and i will soon

Also gonna try out stringing together some combos and stepping away from spirit bomb. But after i give it another go…

Same thing happened to me. I was trying forever, watching the same videos over and over again, it was maddening. Then one day I watched a video over again that I’d seen like 15 times and noticed his finger catching a string I never thought about. Tried it and BOOM, landed my first Spirit Bomb. Only took me a year of watching the same videos over and over again.

Here’s the video that got me to finally land it:

That was helpful too! It explains it slow.

I was (purposely for some reason) only being on one string in preparation for a dismount while trying to do the first hop. Everything fell apart because… well . It’s supposed to lol

Spirit bombs away!

This video helped me learn it, it’s posted above but thought I’d mention it again since that post was from 2 years ago. He starts explaining the first hop around 3:16 into the video.

I DID IT!

Another stupid thing i was doing wrong. Not keeping everything lined up… the string that wraps around the throw hand was almost near my wrist. Got it lined up and landed the second hop the second time. BOOM!

:sparkler:
