I’ve been yoyoing a lot more this year than I have in the past, mostly when I take my kids to the pool. Had a kid shout at me to do a double or nothing, which I found hilarious. It has honestly been a pleasant experience met with more people complimenting it than I thought.
I loved Zion, top 3 national parks for sure
I would like to necro this topic to add to the age old question of “Public throwing.” I want to see the newer users take on this topic as well.
What I want to know is how you guys throw? Are you performative or are you shoegazey and shy?
I do throw in public, quite often in fact. I’ve never met another player but I do catch the occasional passerby that gets hyped for a moment and carries on. I like to refine small parts of larger elements with a responsive and for anyone who I catch watching I’ll usually throw in an eli hop or maybe a shoot the moon to lunar lander. This introvert does as introverts do and I’m usually reserved with my throwing but I’m always happy to point the uninitiated towards the path of yo!
I throw in public a lot, usually very casually with my headphones in and in my own little personal bubble. Usually stuff that is contained and not overly flashy. Dense tech is what I personally gravitate towards.
I imagine (based on what I’ve seen) most folks don’t care about what I’m doing and are just passing by.
As for yo-yo related encounters, I’ve only had a handful. Once meeting a friend of Yuki’s who happened to be taking a local bus during his vacation in the area. Another being during a Will’s announcement video filming, someone came up and asked to try a yo-yo while we were up the ways on a local hiking trail. Hopefully it helped rekindle their interest in yo-yoing haha.
i play yoyo in public pretty frequently! it’s such a good way to kill time while waiting. it can also be nice to find a quiet spot while out and about and yoyo for a bit. i will also frequently go for walks around the neighborhood and yoyo while walking around.
99% of the time i have headphones in while yoyoing in public, i have yet to have any sort of interactions or encounters. if i have a larger bag i will sometimes carry a cheap yoyo and some string to give away but the opportunity has yet to arise.
I once did a skin the gerbil and was asked what my world ranking was.
I don’t usually wear headphones but I feel like we’re a lot alike based of this post!
Where are you from if you don’t mind me asking? I really enjoy my neighborhood walks and would like to know the walking conditions from other players.
No, but in school I made some good freinds because I am not the only yoyoer in school.
sorry I never saw this. i live in the south west of canada, so the summers are great for yoyoing and it rains half the time in the other 3 seasons, so it’s not ideal.
what i came back to the thread to say was -
i was yoyoing at the bus loop and had a guy come up and we chatted a little and i told him to google modern responsive yoyoing. hope he looks into it
It happen to me a lot and mostly when I record videos, some people in the neighbourhood know me as the “yoyo guy” cause I am always in the area recording.
I noticed many family come closer and have a look so sometimes I have to interrupt recording to just show up a bit, I have always a plastic yoyo with a short string in case a kid want to try it
I carry a yoyo with me most of the time, and I had some nice interactions with random people who get amazed by the yoyo (even tho I am mediocre at best ). There was one time when me and my girlfriend visited a museum and I left my throw at home, thinking I won’t need it for the afternoon. There’s a kind of park in front of the museum and I’ve spotted a bunch of guys throwing yoyos and some of them were just chilling on the bench. Went closer and watched them for a short time and I recognized that the two guys sitting on the bench was János Karancz and Tal Mordoch!! I’m really introvert so I did not approached them, but it was unreal! It was a good lesson for not leaving my yoyo at home ever again.
I hope to bump into Janos again sometime given that we live in the same city.
I don’t do it all the time because I usually have my kids with me but if I’m by myself I will bring a yoyo and throw if I can. I just kinda do autopilot stuff to zone out and kill time.
I was throwing outside my daughter’s dance class the other day and at one point I looked up and saw one of the other little girls watching me from the window with a big smile on her face. I just waved, gave a smile back and kept going. All the other parents were just sitting in their cars staring at their phones. No one else cared I was doing it.
I usually bring a yoyo if I’m going to be waiting around for a long time,
had one with me in the airport last week, and was throwing it at the gate/waiting area
