Cubing Corner

I haven’t seen badmephisto, but this guy’s video helped me learn the 4x4x4 cube, so I’m linking to his video for the 5x5x5 tutorial:

I hope it helps.  I haven’t gotten to 5x5x5 yet, but I will probably start next week.  I’ve only been cubing about one year.  I have the V-cube 5x5 to start learning.

Cool.
Does anyone know how to get rid of parIty errors on a void cube? On all the sites I’ve found the people talk in cube language which I cannot understand…

what was the cube language you couldn’t understand? maybe I can translate. haha

All the things like uf and ur and oll lol

U = up, or the top layer
R is right, L is left, f is front, etc.
The lowercase letters aren’t applicable for a 3x3, but they mean to turn an inner layer. like if you had a 5x5, and it said r, it would mean turn the inner right column. Rr would be turn both at once, and R would just be the outtermost right.

the ’ next to them means prime, which means turn them counter clockwise.
as an example, if it said U R U’ R’, you would turn the top layer clockwise, the right column clockwise (away from you), the top layer counter clockwise, then the right column counter clockwise (towards you)
OLL = orienting the last layer. It means getting all the right colour on the last layer you need to solve, but not in the right order. so the corners and centers would be off.
PLL = permutation of the last layer. After oll, pll fixes any cubies that aren’t in the right spot.

The fridrich method is cross (solving the white cross on the bottom), f2l (first two layers), oll (orientation of the top layer), then finally pll (permutation of the top layer, which then solves the cube)

here’s a useful list of pretty much any cubing term you’ll ever hear. Cubefreak | Cube Glossary

1.01 best time on 3x3x3

29.89 Best Time^^

34.24 average xD

3x3 using Full Petrus meathod

currently working on 4x4… but im uber slow at that…

I’ve been able to solve a 3x3x3 for over 4 years now. My best time was like 1:45. Don’t remember.

On that thought one of the tiles from my DIY cube got lost a while back. Does anyone have an extra? Possibly from a broken one?

Thanks

3x3 cube solving for me is about 2-3 minutes. It is kind of slow, but I am just happy that I can solve the thing.

For those of you who can solve a cube in like 20-30 seconds, what method do you use? I use the rubiks cube way like one they teach on the website and my best time with that is like 45s but there is also the friedrich(sp) method too. Just want to know how to solve it faster.

I kind of use fridrich method.
What I do is cross
2nd layer (all but one)
first layer
finish 2nd layer
oll
pll

I don’t know all the oll and pll algorithms yet though. And I’m trying to cut down my f2l so I can do pure fridrich. I average about 35 now.

I do it “the slow way” not sure what it’s called. But, I do the white cross, fill in the white corners and bottom layer, then middle layer, then solve the yellow face at the top, then the last top layer. Not sure what that is called. If anyone is interested in an Edison cube…authentic Korean cube 3x3, let me know, I need to get rid of a bunch and can do it at a good price. PM

Is the rubiks brand good?

Takes a bit of modification to be great.

but for a beginner thats fine!

What’s the best brand?

Got a 4x4 but I fail cause I can’t solve the parity error :stuck_out_tongue:

I have seen it at stores but its usually 10 dollars. Is it worth 10 dollars?

eh… If you hit it with some crc silicone, it’ll turn fine. It just doesn’t cut corners pretty much at all. You’d be better off getting something online for a little more.

I was actually at a thrift store though and they had a rubik’s brand cube there. I solved it in front of the cashier and they gave it to me for free because I could solve it.

You guys should learn keyhole. It’s all sorts of fun.

EDIT: for the record,

Best, Basic: 24.70s
Best, Corners First/Keyhole: 26.11s
I haven’t taken any reliable averages in a while, though. That, and I foget them off the top of my head.

I do know that for me, Keyhole is taking a bit more time, but that’s because I haven’t been doing it for years and years like Basic. It does cut your move count in half with a good solve, though, so it has potential to be blazing fast compared to Basic. I just have to get an eye for it.
