Coffee Thread!

Wanted to resurrect this thread as I’ve recently fallen down the coffee rabbit hole.

I had quit for about 4.5 years due to my heavy reliance on caffeine to function, but the last year I have found myself really enjoying the local coffee scene.

Recently I was gifted a GCP Evo and I have had nothing but fun when pulling my own shots at home.

Picked up a new bag of beans today:

The setup (old photo, upgraded recently to an ims big bang basket, and a bottomless portafilter)

Any recommendations on tools, coffee beans or beverage recipes?

How was your break from caffeine? I also rely on it heavily working nights and have thought about reeling it back.

I don’t think I have a problem but all addicts say that

if you skip it for a day does your head hurt? if no ur fine, if yes maybe back off. that’s my measuring stick anyway lol

i prefer french press. slightly under boiling temp. i boil the water then let it sit 1 min before pouring. steep in the press for 4 min. flavor as desired.

recently found this company. tried a sample pack and their Holy Canoli is AMAZING! plus their package art is dope

I feel completely inadequate now. Compared to this rig, I am like Kevin Costner hand-grinding coffee for the Indians on the plains.

This is solid hardware which is roughly 15 years old and not failed a single time. If you enjoy coffee the Italien way it is a good investment. Only con is you can not drink coffee in a restaurant or bar anymore since most of them taste like ….

I am almost entirely off the caffeine wagon. :frowning: I have essential tremors in my right hand. Caffeine makes it worser.

I still love strong coffee and occasionally drink the high octane stuff.

This thread makes me want to cheat!

Home set up is primarily pour over, Fellow Ode Gen 2 grinder, Fellow Stagg Kettle, V60, Abaca Hemp filters, typically I go for Ethiopian single origin coffee because it tends to be fruity and floral. I use the 4/6 recipe, occasionally a single pour if I’m feeling adventurous lol.

At work I have an Espresso set up with a Delonghi ECP3420 brewer (surprisingly consistent temp/pressure), KinGrinder K6 (16 micron adjustment hand grinder), IMS basket and bottomless portafilter, spring weighted tamper and WDT tool. I’ve got a nearly identical machine at home (ECP3630), and when I want espresso at home I take the grinder home lol.

I don’t drink a lot of coffee 1-2 cups and maybe 1 espresso in the afternoon, but when I do both my routines are very dialed in.

Making good coffee at home ruins coffee everywhere else LOL

Fantastic.

One approach that helped was not to buy or drink coffee unless it was amazing from a taste perspective. This helped with treating more like a treat, limited my reliance since it was no longer about getting energy in the morning. As for energy drinks, they were completely cut out.

100%, I first started by frequenting a top level coffee shop in the Bay and that destroyed 95% of the other shops in the area.

Every time I see this I feel the urge to flag the post as “inappropriate”; or “off-topic”. The nerve…

The grocery store has always been my source for coffee. I have gotten the most enjoyment over the years from Starbucks or Seattle’s Best. But even these have grown quite lackluster in recent years. Inconsistency from one bag to the next are so great that it can literally taste like 2 different coffees. So this past weekend there was a beekeepers festival in the park and my wife loves honey. So you k ow we were there. There was a Roaster from the Lynchburg (Amherst) area there selling coffee that they had just roasted within the last few days. The beans were oily and smelled so other worldly we just had to get some. I’ll give you all this moment to gasp in appall that we brew in a Mr Coffee cheapie drip brew. Now I will say… holy freakin cow the rich and complex flavor bursting from this cup is unreal. I will have to be in the poorhouse to buy cheap coffee again. Out of the Grey Coffee in Amherst VA is the place. If you order high end coffee online, it could be another nice source to try.

I am ashamed to admit this but… I have a grocery store that literally has a wall of boutique-roasted coffees of various roasts and exotic places of origin that I can choose from and have tried on and off over the years. I keep coming back to Starbucks Cafe Verona. I know it is corporate coffee and all that; but it is so good.

I don’t drink coffee, but I’ve spent every morning over the past 20 years making my wife coffee in the morning. I’ve tried it all: percolator, espresso pot, espresso machine, drip machine, manual pour over, kuerig, french press, and Aeropress.

Her current favorite is Death Wish Dark Roast. I make two shots in the Aeropress, and top it off with boiling water to make an Americano.

me too

The deal was too good to be true. Local store had Death Wish dark roast on sale $4 a bag! It wasn’t marked on the shelf either. I may go grab some more in a day or two if there’s any left.

I only drink the darkest of roasts, forged from the fires of hell, and painstakingly tested, and bagged by the souls of the damned.

Oh, and hot take, but coffee “creamer” sucks.
