Anyone else into fragrances?

Have been into the fragrance hobby for around 12 years, it’s something else I enjoy other than throwing. Is anyone else here into collecting fragrances?

How does one go about choosing a proper one?

The only fragrances I’m familiar with are the ones you experience at Magic Tournaments. So no. I’m not into fragrances.

I’ve been to two and this checks out

I only have one nice cologne:

Bought it for my wedding, still love it but use it sparingly, should last me a lifetime lol

From their website:

I’d say that description is pretty accurate

I create new, unique fragrances on a daily basis. My wife never seems to appreciate any of them.

Pull the blanket over her head. She’s probably just not getting a high enough concentration

I spot some imaginary authors! I am wearing memoirs of a trespasser right now! I also have Yesterday haze (love this one) , O, Unknown (didn’t like it) and In love with everything (it was a freebie from them, not really for me though)

I am intrigued by their vibe, I may have to check out a flight of scents

I work for Scentura Creations for a few months one summer selling door to door. Had a bottle of their Polo for years after that.

Hell no. I was into cologne during high-school, but only because I really liked one specific fragrance at the time. Acqu Di Gio (?) however it’s spelled. Now, besides that, I actually like the original* Adidas cologne and think it’s one of the most under-rated and nicest smelling. But other than that. nope.

The mark-up on that stuff is extreme and it’s so wasteful of money. I get it, you like it, and that’s fine. But not for me. Being an adult now - pretentious name brands, massive mark-ups for a bunch of chemicals seems asinine to me. I would even argue candles are a lot more interesting (never add water to a candle if it goes on fire out of control —–> very very dangerous)

My go to fragrances are:

  • Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille
  • JPG Le Male

This is of course my fall / winter mix, primarily.

Summer, I am in between a few but it isn’t super common and more nostalgia than it is anything (nothing crazy expensive)

  • Estee Lauder Pleasures for Men

This is probably my main summer rotator.

My collection is fairly small these days simple because that’s what I like to gravitate too. I deal in high end mens style / classic mens stuff, so it’s something I care about.

I have several others, but I would be lying if I said I use them much. I find myself in the circle of these 3 nearly exclusively.

I plan to add 1 or 2 Creed fragrances in the next year or two to broaden a bit. I am a bit torn between them when I have my hands on them / enjoy the notes. Figured I would scale it down with things calm down for me and hopefully make a choice then, but I am in no hurry.

I think it just depends on what you do. When I was wearing formal attire more often than I do today, it made sense on occasion to set the mood. Something powerful and unique, like TF TV can set a tone that absolutely delivers a vibe. It isn’t cheap, but it is also not cheaply replicated (though it doesn’t stop people from trying).

These days, though I still deal in classical clothing, I don’t dress formal as much due to the nature of working primarily remotely. I still have church and dinners / etc, but life doesn’t allow for the more care free financial situation it once did for me, so I have slimmed down what I enjoy and what I do.

But yeah, it isn’t for the front of heart in the high end portion of collecting. There are plenty of entry to moderate level fragrances that also deliver in big ways though, you don’t have to exclusively stick into the expensive zone to enjoy.

Sick collection, what are your favourites? I’m not deep into it but I see two of the three I own on your shelves, so we presumably have similar taste.

I’ve been into fragrances for years… Decades… Over a half a century…

And without ever missing a beat without ever skipping a week… Every seven days I buy at least three fragrances.

This last week, the first fragrance was a pepperoni pizza. The second fragrance was a double double from In-N-Out. And the third fragrance was a submarine sandwich from New York deli.

Funnily enough I had started this thread a couple of months ago: Anyone Here Into Perfume?

You have a nice collection.

I asked my mom to cop a bottle of the comme des garçon black from the duty free when she was traveling internationally but they didn’t have it. She surprised me on my birthday a few days ago with a bottle plus a bunch of samplers to try.

She got them all from this website luckyscent that has a ton of fragrances and writes about them well (?) I’m not an expert so they could be all nonsense but the descriptions are fun to read either way. Reminds me of how yoyos get written about…lol hah! It is nice to be able to try a lot of fragrances for cheaper bc bottles can be expensive but the samplers are usually around 5$ so I appreciate that.

Another really interesting scent I have liked in the past was concrete by comme des garçon. That one is like a deconstructed sandlewood and supposed to reflect the smell of fresh rain on concrete. I love when fragrances call out very specific and unique scents from real life like that or freshly cut grass or something.

I am not very into fragrances rn like I did have a phase where I started to explore the space more but now I just try stuff here and there. I do really appreciate the complexity of crafting a fragrance and how emotionally impactful a scent can be. Cool to see your collection and thanks for sharing.
