I was under the impression that the first time around they were lingering around for quite a while. I remember I bought a friend of mine a Goose Bay edition, just moseying in without any pressure, and they were there beforehand for quite a bit. I think it was over two weeks.
'Sides, that’s why I added the whole “If I remember what I heard correctly” to show a bit of doubt, since I’m not sure how far their head was up their rear when they said it. It’s just something I’ve heard bouncing around multiple times.
And furthermore, why are we still whining about affordable Caribou yoyos when, like you said, the Campfire has been selling just fine right up there with other models?
I think that’s the problem. Once you start cutting cost, something has to be compromised. If I were CLYW, that’s the last thing I’d do. Their business is entirely dependant on their spotless reputation for interesting, high quality throws. To some degree that’s true for all business, but CLYW has definitely carved out a niche market that is totally reliant on a user base who is willing to buy expensive throws immediately, sight unseen.
Selling cheaper throws at the risk of damaging that perception, even just a tiny bit, could be enough to destroy their image and put an end to their current business model. From then on, everyone would be wondering if this new high end model has the same underwhelming qualities of “cheap throw X” they released last time. Not worth it.
You say this as if their cost is directly responsible for the quality of their product. It’s not. One Drop does pretty much all of the dirty work for CLYW lately, and yet OD throws are $30-$60 cheaper depending on colorway, despite being even more time consuming to manufacture because of the side effect system. I don’t mind CLYW’s prices, they can charge what they want, but don’t for a second think they’re expensive because of their design/effort/quality/whatever, they’re expensive because people will buy them at that price and therefore there’s no reason to sell them cheaper.
The fact that stock of these is running out of stock in minutes, only indicates that the price is still too low.
If you think it’s too high, don’t buy
I know there are great throws going for 200$, I don’t buy’em, for me it’s too high
Yea since they sell out so fast…and this is Chris’s only income (I kind of highly doubt this but someone said it. I would definitely make some more peaks and sell them for like $500 dollars each and I bet they would all sell. I would raise all the prices. I buy them myself too and I am saying this. I don’t want the AC though that thing looks like such a fail. I have them all except BvM and Bassalope. I also have YYF,YYJ,OD,ILYY,SPYY,VSNTTN,CRUCIAL,DUNCAN,GENERAL YO. My CLYWs are better IMO. I do prefer the ministar to the campfire though… campfire is FIRE for a pocket throw I just prefer more rim weight for small throws… Campfire is more fun to throw though… The only reason to lower prices would be to make a lot more and become a bigger company kind of like how YYF tries to own the yoyo community and get those sponsors. Chris- hustle, grind, make that money you deserve! Or whatever makes you happy of course. 8)
I remember reading that CLYW’s used to be cheaper, I don’t know about $30-60 cheaper than what they sell for now. They had their limited runs and colour-ways like CLYW does and they would sell out fast as usual. Then people would sell them on b/s/t’s and e-bay for $30-60 or more and make decent profits off of somebody else’s hard work. I think CLYW’s should be expensive not only for the quality throws they are and the uniqueness of each throw, but for Chris to make a living off his hard work and not have profits he could be making going to scalpers.
I remember reading this when it first became a topic… woooow. Boy has CLYW grown in only a year.
On a side note… I’ve heard through the grape vine that Chris may be doing another run of GE’s. Hopefully some better colors. I feel some of the more “boring” colorways he did were the reason they did not sell out originally. The GE is not only my favorite CLYW but one of my favorite yoyos in general. The thing does not get enough credit.
GE is the only throw I regret trading. It has a personality that screams out indifference, unwanted, ugly, and blah.blah,blah. But, bottom line is this is one of the most fun, delightful, stable and most competition worthy throws out there. I can remember reading some comments from Adam Brewster
promoting the GE and saying get one while you can. Thanks Adam, glad I got one, sorry I traded it. I’m happy to have the opportunity to get another one.
Thanks Chris for doing a second run (I’m in!). Could you make mine iridescent green kinda Wasabi flavored? (major tongue in cheek stuff)please.
GE was one of the best CLYWs made, but had 2 big issues - 1. The price. Yowza. Seriously expensive. Not sure if this was a cost due to manufacturing, or if it was just because it was right at the peak of CLYW hype and Chris was seeing just how far he could push things. But $155 for a basic wash is crazy money. 2. The ano. The hulk smash and hulk smash fade looked nice, but everything else was not great imo. Basic washes, especially single color, are so boring compared to most CLYW splashes, and i always found Yogi ugly. Pretty obvious that the price and finishes really hurt demand, if CLYW had done basic splashes and dropped the price $10 they’d have sold out in days, maybe weeks, instead of months and months. Huge misstep by CLYW, and hopefully they learned.
