I seldom find yoyo’s that are true “keepers” weather it is the colorway or the design or just the play. There is always something about them that to me keeps me from keeping them. I do however have a select few that are going nowhere. Most of that is for reasons other than what I listed above. My 1st One Drop (Green Haze Y Factor) will be with me as long as I can throw. And there are a few others that I can see staying in the case for a very long time… Part of my problem is that I like to keep my collection small. SO a lot of the time when new yoyo’s come out that I want I have to sell something else to buy that one.

That is exactly it man!! With time you really can figure out what you know you will like based on specs and pics alone!! But then there are times that some yoyo’s come out of nowhere and knock your socks off!! It is all in the fun of the hobby though!! There is always something new and exciting coming out!!

Heheh, my problem is that my taste is “a whole bunch of variety”. Love being able to grab something classic, small and light like the Smooth Move and then flip over to something more modern and dense like the Pro. That’s really what keeps me buying so many throws (and getting rid of so few). I think we share the desire for a small collection; I’m just not skilful or ruthless at executing.

I actually have an almost opposite perspective.

I think it can be incredibly unhealthy to be too attached to anything.

Before I was sponsored I tried to make it a point to not keep yoyos for more than a year so I didn’t get too sentimental w/ them.

Now that I’m on the CLYW team, I do feel it’s important as a representative to have 1 of each model available for others to try out when I’m at a contest/meet/etc so people can see what models they may like… but I’ve even tried to make it a point to let go of some of my favorites like the turtlechute and the balls peak so I don’t get too attached.

Who knows, maybe in 20 years when I’m no good anymore and I’m not sponsored I’ll sell 'em off, but for now I feel like it would be inconsiderate to Chris considering all the stuff he’s done for me.

The only one I probably wouldn’t ever sell regardless of team affiliations etc is my wedding edition peak - but even then, that has more to do with its significance to my wife than to me personally, and I feel like it’d be in bad taste to ever get rid of it anyway.

Other than that, sell yer yoyos kids. They’re just toys. - But take my opinion w/ a grain of salt… I’m well on my way to being a curmudgeonly old man at the ripe age of 27… - also, I might just be attached to an idea of non-attachment… haha.

I completely agree with this. I actually felt the other person was getting a lower end of a deal recently, so I added an extra yoyo to go with the other yoyos I was trading to him/her.

I won’t trade either I use all my yoyos in the course of my week and I love way one differently and they all fill a different feeling and style of play and allow me to mess around a little differently with the same tricks. I just can’t bring myself to get rid if any of them.

What about throws you have multiples of? I believe I saw an unboxing vid of you getting a couple Tokens? Granted Tokens aren’t worth much, but it’d be a start!

I’ve bought many throws convincing myself that if I didn’t love them I could put them on the BST. I did not love a number of them. I’ve never put a yoyo on the BST.

Sorta like selling off pets even if they aren’t your absolute favorite they still are apart of the family.

But seriously, I fully understand how you feel. I sold an estimated 5% of my throws since I began. I sell very few. Many of those were “beginner yo-yos,” or cheap yo-yos that I had become bored with. The other ones, that were either not in my ideal colors, did not fit my preferences, or were just a double, were given away instead. I have given away more than I have sold. I have given away or sold a few that I regretted getting rid of. Most, I have not missed. But, it is a horrible feeling if you miss them.

To buy a yo-yo, I really had to want it to begin with. That makes it harder to sell.

Yeah I feel that any that I have would just make me feel sad if I didn’t have these are fairly important as it’s the activity in my life and keeps me moving and it’s an important time in my life to have a good variety as well as I’m just sorta of attached and not to mention I got it from one of my favorite yoyo players (even if I didn’t I’d still have a hard time selling any way) I just love each of these yoyo it seems more then I thought.

As for your question Snafu, I definitely feel the same way as you do. Some yoyos, such as my Code 1’s and Ministar, I would never give away unless absolutely necessary.

Similarly to you, I got a very fair offer on my Yeti, yet I couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger. Sure, there will be hundreds, if not thousands of these Yetis, and I would have made a profit, but this one was mine. The sentimental value of certain yoyos in my collection will keep me from ever giving them up.

Exactly I just like to hang on to my collection and don want the regrets and then not be able to find a suitable replacement.

Haha! Yeah, there’s another: got a Wrath from my wife for Christmas. I mean, I love that yoyo anyhow, but definitely can’t ever get rid of it.

Occurred to me to add this: I’ve had a much easier time giving away yoyos. Granted, most have been plastics, but they were players and actually had a bit of sentimental value to me. I also gave away a Capless that I loved and yet I’ve never once regretted it. It’s almost like when I give them away I’m saying “hey little buddy, found a good home for you!” which isn’t a bad feeling.

I seldom sell yoyos, so far anyways. What I usually do, is try to keep up on various folks that have been looking/searching/asking around about yoyos that just seem to nowhere to be found.

If I recognize that somebody is on a serious Quest to rectify something they regret, I will contact them about selling or trading(if I have what they are looking for, obviously). That way, it is a good feeling to help somebody accomplish their mission.

I remember, many years ago, Playmaxx came out with the Nuclear Ace(serious glow in the dark powder coating on a little yoyo).

They were really nice(at the time). They were selling, but not superfast. So I would buy one and then a few days later, another one. Well, I ended up with 4 of them. And I think they only made a total of about 30 or 40? So, I had like, 10 percent of the Whole run, lol.

I didn’t want to feel like I was Hoarding them, so I literally gave them away for a song. Since I gave them away, over time, I didn’t pay attention to whether I had 3 left or 2 left or one left.

One day I realized that the last one I passed on to a New owner, was the LAST Nuclear Ace I had. That Totally bummed me out. From 4 to nothing, intentionally unintentional.

I looked and asked all over the place, but no luck!

Then one day, I was contacted by another yoer. I had shared my sad little story to a few of the guys. One of them, while checking out yoyos on Ebay, noticed one of the Aces on Ebay. He won the Auction and about 4days later the Nuclear Ace had been shipped to my house. I had gone from 4 to none and had been looking ALL over to just get one.

I called him up and he just said,’ I knew you were seriously looking for one and I sure know that feeling’.

I will Never forget how Happy I was when I opened the little box. I notice a similar feeling when I picture somebody on the ‘other end of the Mail’ opening a box and seeing the yo they have been losing sleep over.

It really doesn’t matter whether getting their Holy Grail yoyo, is the result of a trade, a gift or a sale. Finally snagging the Elusive yoyo is A Special Treat.

Every few months, I get out a few dozen yoyos and just set them on a table. I divide them into 2 groups: 1 have to keep and 2 expendable. Then I start throwing them for a few minutes apiece. And in less than the first 30 seconds, I remember exactly what I really liked about just about every single one of them. So about the time I am done, the yoyos have once again, become all part of the ’ have to keep’ group, hahahaha.

…All that being said, though, I think how bad somebody might need some money, can dictate how 'less detached they can become to their yoze in a big hurry.

Wow now I have a yoyo on my list I’ll never likely come across a small glow in the dark yoyo just sounds amazing, sadly the playmaxx stuff is semi hard to come by I’ve been looking for a cold fusion and/or a bumblebee gt for some time and the ones I’ve seen in my price range were beat up and missing the little pin (I could careless about the other stuff the tin would be cool but the pin is more important to me.) but I know that I will find one :).

I’ve all but given up on trying to figure out what to keep and what’s not important enough to keep. My wife told me once and only once that I needed to sell a few and we quickly came to the agreement I could keep them all lol ( I won’t divulge my methods lol), it’s just too hard to figure out what one I won’t feel bad about.

Also awesome about your pay it forward method, I love how it was done to you and now it’s become part of how you roll! Again thanks for sharing and slowing us to get to know a little more about the Doc! You are a great dude and I always appreciate your posts!

The only ones I own multiples of are ones that I love and could choose between colorways and really enjoyed each for different reasons (I think TotalArtist has a love for multiple colorways secretly since she has a super 30 day twin photo shot going, I love that you are sharing too TotalArtist!).

So hose doubles are special as well.

I’m glad I’m not alone in my obsessive hoarding of yoyos but I really wish I had the willpower that some of you do to just let some of the yoyos go. Maybe this thread will give me the strength I need
