Cake’s String Reviews

Totally agree. I think for me its because I get to share the pain.

“This string gave me a rope burn so bad it actually bled!”

I had worse string to give but I couldn’t remember the origins find yourself lucky in that @theendofcake

Otherwise I exactly the review I was expecting for such a reputable brand

honestly i felt really bad for this review, someone prob put some thought into the creation, but tbh it’s just not as good as other more available options

1: Good Luck! I’m currently also buried neck deep in school work, I feel the struggle.
2: Im kinda new to yo-yoing + I know almost nothing about string, so I’ve just been using a basic 50/50 string. However, Im about to get some kitty string very soon to go with my new throw!

you’ll definetly feel the difference, pure poly just feels better to me, but it’s not as soft. definitely does everything better in my experience

Idk what string I’m using anymore it’s already on the yoyo and I’m playing it lol. I think I’m using a combination of alpha line, slushies and A&A V

I can’t go back to 100% polyester strings after being spoiled with the glorious blends from Zipline. I also just got my shipment from @Project44 and an liking the two I’ve tried so far.

As for performance, in my opinion blends with nylon whip and hold a neutral tension a lot better than polyester of the same thickness. Could just me me tho.

Is there a breakdown somewhere of what effect comes with different types of string? Especially on a continuum?

Like…
smooth —> coarse
Poly —> 50/50 —> nylon
Thin —> thick

And whatever other things I’m forgetting? Mostly just get a basis before getting into specific strings from various companies and what’s getting tweaked/changed between them.

for my side of things, i go over softness during break-in, so that would be my version of the smooth-coarse scale. same with thin and thick, if you have a 4.5 gap yoyo with good pads you can probably get an idea to what i’m experiencing when you bind. in terms of poly versus nylon, i don’t have those as graded rankings and i don’t really know the nylon level of the strings that i’ve used, but i know a few!

a&a f1 is around 70/30 nylon/poly, fV is probably around 60/40 poly/nylon, the fades are 100% nylon, and i think yysl nytro is 50/50 for both normal and +. i’d maybe tag them here or dm them to get the exact numbers, but everything else should be straight polyester.

hope any of that helps! :3

I had asked Aaron about these a few months back:

Formula 1 is ~80% nylon, 20% poly
Formula V is ~40% nylon, 60% poly
Fades 100% nylon

that time of the day, just thought i’d get this one out of the way . also, cage free doesn’t mean they were raised in good conditions, it just means they were raised outside of bars and crowded in giant death boxes instead, which isn’t much better. just something to think about.

YoTricks Cage Free String (Green) || C (74/100)

This is my opinion, so I don’t feel bad for saying that the reason it’s a bit low is my own personal pet peeves. First off, it was pretied, which has nothing to do with ranking but probably put me in a bad mood while using it for the first few minutes. It was also really scaley and coarse, but not to a lesser degree like with Kitty, OT, and such. It felt like classic YoYoExpert string, but more tangible (which is gross). It did get better, but just barely. Besides that, it’s pretty average string. Not as bad as Watieaboo thank goodness, but not as good as some other options in my opinion. Whips were a bit hard for me (which may be a technique issue as usual), and slack felt a bit missing, but I can’t put my finger on what was missing. I’ll edit this if I find out.
Takeaways! Good cheap option if you care ever so slightly about your string use but don’t want to buy better, closer poly bulk options for some reason. This can totally be the string you grow with, but it’s just not for me. Stats below

Durability 30 min (4) not bad!
Durability 1 hr (5) pretty solid
Personal Thickness Feel (2) got a inconsistent at low rpm, just not my thing
Whip Feel Break-In (3) technique needs to be DOWN, break-in was bad
Whip Feel 1 hr (3.5) def possible, not as good as other poly string. could be a 4 on a good day
Slack Feel Break-In (4) open and nice
Slack Feel 1 hr (3.5)
Tension Hold over 1 hour overall(4.5)
Softness during break-in (2.5) bad at beginning, softened out but still not great. average
Overall consistency over 1 hour (5) felt amazing
Total: 37 x 2 = 74, 74 = C graded based on letter system (A: 100-91, B: 90-81, C: 80-71, D: 70-61, F: 60<)

Side note, I’ll start including the color of the string I’m using for some transparency points. Thanks for reading :heart_hands:

My first thought reading this was “aw… the poor string :frowning: ”, and then I quickly remembered that string wasn’t sentient.
