Breakaway help

I’ve been learning tricks at a pretty steady pace. This morning i learned tge simple way to get into green triangle from trapeze, but i realized something while i worked on it. My breakaway sucks!! I have a pretty good front gravity throw and most times its pretty darn straight so until i knock it off balance in a trick im spinning really well. My breakaways are so tilty ive lost a huge chunk of spin time with how much i have to straighten it by the time i even really start the trick I’m attempting. I guess i just noticed it less with simpler shorter tricks. I’m better at it if i do the normal throw just pivoting my arm to the other plane, but i really like 5a and id rather just develop 1 way to throw my breakaway. Plus i dont want to have a good break for 1a and a crazy crappy one as soon as i strap on my cw. Any general tips for straightening out a tilty throw?

Just spam breakaways with a responsive yoyo and focus on getting each throw straight. Also let go before you throw. How you hold the yoyo in your hand doesn’t really matter bc you’re going to let go and then throw.

What do you mean let go before i throw it?

I actually made a mini tutorial on this recently for a friend who was trying to get better at breakaways, especially to move past doing the approach where you start with flexing your bicep as that can get a bit cumbersome and awkward as you progress. Hope it helps!

Edit: Fwiw it was in response to a question he had so it starts with that but once you get into it it’ll still help. I mainly address an issue he had with tilting and the angle of the throw since he was releasing too early and too hard, but based on your questions above it should still hopefully be relevant!

That helped visually. I see the drop henry was referring to. Is all that still the same for 5a breakaway?

I’m glad! Yes the drop is pretty similar for 5a too but you’re just holding the yoyo differently because of the counterweight

That little bit of slack before whipping it around feels more awkward coming off the 5a grip. Should that slack be shorter and less pronounced, or is it something to just get used to? And chance either of you has a short clip of a 5a breakaway so i can visualize yhe motion to emulate?

Yeah so I think dans video does a great job at explaining what you want to happen. I think it would be worth holding the Yoyo with nth and then swinging it around just like Dan does in his video, as an exercise to try.

Gotcha covered! I just got one recorded and up and I’d say it’s similar but you’re probably right that the slack may be a bit less pronounced. I don’t notice a huge difference but whatever helps you be more consistent is what I’d recommend  I will say though that I tend to scoot the yoyo down to the ends of my pointer and thumb to make the throw more comfortable but you can still do it from the standard grip without that adjustment.
