It has been another great year for YoYo releases. While I haven’t tried them all, the ones I have thrown have been excellent. Here are a few that I think we’re some of the best.
I loved the Petri. It is very minimalist in design and looks like it would be tricky to perform anything on it, but it’s so much fun on the string. The large "shmoove"alike area on the inside is such a great idea on a slimline and it really helps reducing the friction on the string.
The new Skyline from yoyofactory is a really fun little throw. Although I got mine with the Ti888 forever bundle, you can buy it on its own for a great price and with the hubstacks it really opens up ways to play and it has a great finish for grinds.
Despite being released toward the tail end of the year, I think the Ti888 is one of the best releases. Never having owned an 888, I can’t really compare it to the original, but this Ti throw does have a certain old school feel to it. Being a lot smaller than the average releases makes it ideal for carrying around in your pocket and the fact that it’s Titanium means you won’t have to worry about it getting knocked around in your pocket or bag. The hubstacks give you a lot of various colour and functional options too. I really think yoyofactory accomplished their goal that they set out to achieve; a yoyo that honours its origins and that could potentially last forever! Really excellent yoyo.
Now on to my top 3.
The Tmbr ehKnown is probably my favourite fixed axle that has come out in the last few years. I really liked the 20ehteen but I didn’t really gel with it, however this one I feel really has raised the bar again on fixed axle. Colin has always made great yoyos but this I feel is the pinnacle of his accomplishments. The weight of the ply fits in well with the size of the yoyo and feels smooth in the hand. It shoots the moon like a beast and it’s light to catch stalls nicely. Even on an unexpected snag, when it hurtles back towards your hand, there aren’t any sharp edges that could cause damage to fleshy bits. The wooden threaded axle is genius too. A true joy to throw.
In the number two spot on my list comes the very excellent collaboration from G2 and A-RT: the Life. I think it’s probably one of the best playing organic shaped yoyos ever. Very similar in appearance to the Grail in that it is also very minimalist. The rim weight gives it an edge over the Grail when it comes to spin time and the inner groove near the response reduces friction. Very comfy in the hand, it can handle multiple string layers with ease and can be played fast when needed and slow for relaxing tricks. A versatile yoyo that is so fun to throw.
In the number one spot I’m putting the Ti Vayder. Based on the Ti Walker, with only a few minor tweaks, the Vayder is a ten year old design. That being said, it is one of the best playing yoyos that I have. I’ve not tried a Ti Walker but since having the Vayder, I’ve been itching try one to compare the two as the formers is so highly regarded. Slightly undersized by today’s standards, but the Vayder doesn’t lack power on a throw. Smooth on the string, sometimes it doesn’t even look like it’s spinning. Excellent spintime and fits the hand like it was made to be there. One of the main winning factors for this one, is the price. One of the cheapest titanium YoYos on the market, I’m sure this was the first Ti that a lot of people ever bought. If you haven got one in your collection already, I urge you to try and pick one up, it could be the best yoyo design to date and will be tricky to knock off the top spot.
Well that’s what I think anyway. 2019 was a great year for YoYos and 2020 has a lot to live up to!
