Honestly if mr85 could be made in concave and 4.5mm it would be the perfect bearing.
Sadly available concave bearings in a size are a tad slim and snaggy but nearly there.
With all that said current available and easy to get size d are my favorite .
The slightly smaller diameter gives just a bit more snap in the bind and some more initial rpm. (Maybe less overall spin time but a regen makes that moot)
Since I started throwing yoyos, I have a preference for D-type bearings. I enjoy more the sensation that D-type bearings transmit in the game than with C-type… I recommend that your next throw be with a D bearing (or smaller;)
i think it depends. it seems more like if the yoyo is designed with the bearing in mind, it can be an organic pairing and a great experience. likewise, i think if the bearing size is an afterthought and is just like “welp never done a d so slap one in for the sake of having a d bearing” doesn’t get you anywhere except accidenting (i know i made up a word, i dont care imma do it anyway) into good design. so i think bearing choice isnt a one size fits all thing but rather a factor in overall design. same as response should be carefully considered instead of just assuming 19mm slim is always the right answer
i will say, aside from any design aspects, c bearings are plentiful, mostly high quality, and very easy to come by, so i feel like those are non performance considerations
I’ll agree bearing size and shape in the end are very small preferences that overall if designed well don’t impact the yoyo that greatly. Availability is a big thing and standardization is more preferential for majority of throws
Also generally smaller/slimmer yoyo prefer smaller bearing but big /wide yoyo I would rather a larger bearing
D I especially like in a smaller throw. And A or MR85 can also be really awesome. I feel like the smaller bearings can make smaller throws feel larger in play. Take something like the Pop Star. If it had come with an MR85 it would have been a completely different experience.
65+ yoyos - 90% C bearing - just because that’s what is prevalent. I have a lot yo-yos that just sit in my case. Bought it - and it was “meh.”
My D Bearing yo-yos - haven’t bought one I didn’t love yet. Now, that’s not at all to say I only like D bearings - I love plenty of my C throws - my current EDC is the G2 Druid. BUT, I do think there is something special about a well designed D bearing throw.
I don’t have a lot of experience with D bearings, the only one that comes to mind is the DD Oasis that I am currently enjoying from a PiF. I’m not 100% sure I fully understand the hype around it, but it is indeed pretty nice to play. I think that D bearings could use some more representation, there are SO many C bearing designs lol
I agree that the PopStar would be very different with a small bearing. I might even prefer it.
OTOH. . .
I think that bearing size can make a big difference, especially if the yo-yo is designed around it. But bearing size alone may not be consequential to a particular design.
I have D bearings that feel like they really showcase the bearing, and others where it doesn’t seem to add anything special. To be fair, the latter cases could be considered examples of a design that is just balanced in a different way. But personally, I want D bearings to have a distinctive spin intensity.
C bearings on undersized yo-yos always feel especially loose on the unwind and more tilt-prone due to the lower walls. Maybe that wide-openness is a plus for someone else.
