Pads + D-bearings

Random musings for the day:

What would happen if a yoyo with a D-bearing were to use the large 19mm pads that tend to pair with the larger C-spec bearings? How would this alternate pairing (D bearing & 19mm pads) affect the play of a throw?

Has there ever been a throw with the combo?

Yeah this has been done before. Having the response further away from where the string is simultaneously makes it feel more snaggy while also being slippier on binds and throws.

It’s a bad combination that’s only done to save time/money, not to make a better yoyo. FD x RS Canary was initially C bearing pads during the first proto, and then the second proto changed to pads that properly fit D bearings and it made the yoyo significantly better all around. There’s still some boutique D bearing releases that have shipped production runs with C bearing pads, but i’ll refrain from naming them. It’s really just a bad design choice that makes the yoyo worse.

Response isn’t a one-size-fits-all aspect of yoyo design. Trying to put C bearing response on a D bearing just feels lazy.

I believe @hobbygod of Dressel and YYWS have D bearing designs with 19mm Pads. I have a CAPSTAN ‘22 like this and it plays fine. However I prefer the Freshly Dirty sized pad.

I’m not a fan of that combo myself. It can work but like Mable bites it can result in wonky binds

Having the response pad further from the bearing can result in that “thud” at the end of the string that never feels very comfortable. The reason is from the last bit of the string sliding on the thicker lip between the bearing seat and the response.
