Pretty much the title says it all. I need to pick up some C and A responsive bearings and generally wanted to know if anyone had a recommendation on ones they have or use that are good/good spin time?
My young son and his friends in the neighborhood throw responsive yo-yo’s and I wanted to get some replacements for their throws.
not sure if spin time is what you’re really looking for for responsive. anyway, fast eddy bearings has great quality bearings and they come packed with grease which makes em perfect for responsive without lube. the ones I’ve gotten from them I’ve never had to add anything to in the year I’ve been using them, which is perfect for me because i absolutely despise lube. also, you can buy them in bulk if you want
I second Fast Eddies! I buy in bulk and their bearings are perfect for responsives. They don’t have c bearings in stock at the moment but I use them for a, d, mr85, tom Kuhn bearings, g bearings, weird bearings I’m planning to use. For c bearings anything is good honestly grab the dimensions and buy them from Amazon or Ali express or wherever if you need a bunch.
And for low maintenance responsive A bearings for kids, I’d strongly recommend double rubber shields. They add a little bit of resistance, which in itself helps keep it responsive, and they also are vastly better at keeping the lube/grease inside and keeping dirt/dust outside. What you want for “A” size are MR105-2RS bearings, which you can find at Fast Eddies or any number of other places.
Unfortunately “half spec C” aren’t made with rubber shields. You can however get full width flat C bearings with rubber shields (R188-2RS).
hello, brand spankin’ new thrower who’s been reading through different threads. to confirm: are you saying fast eddy: a, d, mr85 bearings are responsive? or out of all of your responsive and unresponsive bearings, the ones you listed are your preferred options? i got sold a yoyo with an unresponsive bearing and am trying to switch it out to responsive, but fast eddy’s website is kind of overwhelming since they make a million different options.
Fast eddy doesn’t have any C sized bearings right now, I’ve been looking for some rubber shielded greased bearings in bulk myself right now. If you need something responsive, you can buy a lithium grease type and use that in the bearing for a fast fix. Almost any grease will do actually, it doesn’t have to be lithium. Amazon has some pregreased, I think that’s what @AudreySickburn posted above.
What your listing are bearing sizes which are yoyo specific colloquial terms. Ball Bearings | YoYo Wiki | Fandom They all translate to standard sizes though. Mr85 are the only one we haven’t renamed yet. all of these bearings can be made as responsive or unresponsive. Generally responsive bearing have lube, grease or a thinner width to either slow spin or reduce the gap size so there is more friction against the string from the pads. Some YoYo’s also use thicker pads or recess the bearing seat to achieve this same effect.
You can also sometimes use a thicker and softer string to get more response. Generally if your trying to change to responsive and don’t care to go back quickly you can use a lubricant on the bearing to achieve your desired goal.
Pictures of the yoyo and bearing in question will help us help you a bit
I’ve been super tempted to grab unresponsive u shaped from a direct china contact just cause 100 unres bearings seems ideal at this point as I often fix bearings and pads at club
Yeah I have no idea what type of bearing I have. I don’t know anything at all about yoyos or bearings. I bought a 2 dollar Duncan at my grocery store that had wobbly throws regardless of how straight I tried to throw it, so figured I’d get one others recommended. I asked in a throwers discord for anyone’s used shooting star or recess, and someone sold me their shooting star. I didn’t think to ask if they’d changed the responsive bearing out, which was a bummer, as I’d prefer to learn on a responsive one before working up to unresponsive. Wanna know what I should switch it out with but am clueless. This can apparently take half spec and C size, but as I was reading through this thread and similar threads on this forum, it’s not limited to ‘just’ half spec or C. So I’m still kind of confused on where to go from here.
That’s a standard c bearing. If you grease it, it will respond. Slap some lube of any kind. I like nanolube and super lube but you can literally smear Vaseline in there.
I would consider not making it responsive if your end goal is playing unresponsive as binding is not hard to learn. This is coming from someone who almost exclusively plays responsive, if your goal is mess around and have fun, or learn responsive and then learn unresponsive as a separate study area then go for it. If you are looking at responsive as a stepping stone to unresponsive it won’t really work that way imo, you will just hit yourself with a yoyo a lot.
Want to say sorry for hijacking the original poster’s thread, and thanks for the heads up on changing it into responsive.
So just a drop of super lube onto one of the ball bearings: does it matter if it’s super lube thin lube or super lube grease? one youtube video mentioned a difference between grease and lube for responsive vs unresponsive but I wasn’t really understanding what he was saying.
Edit: and also, would it make more sense to switch the bearing out for something ‘automatically’ responsive so I don’t have to lubricate or grease it (as) frequently? unresponsive is not the goal, but might be something I want to do much later on. i bought the yoyo hoping to just throw it, not with the assumption that i’d spend hours and hours honing my craft to learn tricks.
Thin lube will make it responsive for a short bit but will eventually wear down/break in but if you’re wanting snappy for a bit longer, a thicker lube would be better. I don’t think the thick grease will be necessary (grease is much more viscous than the thick/thin lube). Though the grease will last you the longest, that’s what I’m using in my responsive throws to behave more like fixed axles with that coveted fixie snap.
What ended up happening with me was when I got back into yoyo about 15 years ago, I was still used to responsive…then I was finding that gradually the yoyo was not responding. It was a natural point in my yoyoing adventure to learn to bind and it just clicked.
Shooting Star’s a good yoyo even once it’s unresponsive, I bought one a few years ago because I was in need of a slim C bearing to throw into a yoyo as a dedicated modern responsive yo and no slim bearings were available, I threw in the unresponsive into the shooting star. I had also tried a friend’s shooting star out and fell in love with it leading me toward wanting to nab one.
