A Year of Fixed Axle - "Fixed Axle '15"

Love the Baldwin… it was my gateway into the Fixed Axle Wood life.

Me too. Even though I’ve thrown plastic Duncan butterflies and imperials, it was the Baldwin that made me love fixed axles. I’m going to be using an 2014 eH, TMBR Baldwin, BC Blackbird and a newly purchased 77 rules Higby painted Profly for 2015.

I’m thinking about getting a Hildy Brothers Currier. Is it a good yoyo?

I’ve got a maple one, love it! I highly recommend them.

I will second AaronW’s recommendation on this one. I’ve got the currier in Purpleheart and Padauk. They are wonderful throws. Purpleheart is super solid and Padauk seems a lot lighter than the PH.

I’ve got a purple heart Hildy Currier and am really impressed with the finish. These guys took some serious care with even and sufficient sanding. I like mine with the thickest cotton string possible for stalls and such. I play some good ol’ slick 6 in it when I want less response.

Which version of the baldwin have you guys played? I bought an ash one when they first came out. It’s a great little BB of a throw at just 47 grams. I’ve been pondering the oak and bubinga, but I need to stop spending money! Added an OUT Pocket Love, TK Mandala 6, SF era No Jive Sunburst, Currier, Sullivan, and Eh in the last month. Oh well, as long as I don’t have more than Ed I don’t have a problem do I?

That was a great comment.

But you have a problem… the one we all do.  You love this great toy and you appreciate the simplicity of it while accepting the limitations it carries.

JRod and I have been chatting about how to keep this simple for us in 2015 and I put together a little blog.

I want to offer all of you the chance to write blog entries or make videos for this during your Fixed Axle 15 challenge.

Feel free to submit it to Playsimpleblog@gmail.com

#fixedaxle15

I have the Padauk Currier that I bought on sale last “Black Friday” and the Baldwin. Between the two I prefer the Currier. It has a nicer feel and for me it plays better. Of course new week I will be receiving my EH. I wonder what I will prefer then.

I just made two cotton strings. One that is over 8 feet long and a thick amazing string that is perfect for fixed axle that holds string tension well, is soft, smooth on hands and during play.

That sounds awesome!

Share the wealth!

I tried shoot the moon on the really long string. It didn’t end well. I can do some loops on it. It kinda sucks though, it’s almost imposable to control and comes back with such a powerful force.

Ha… i can see that.

I may consider doing this. I’d have my own rules, but I would say that when I’m not with other throwers I’d only use a FAT. I like trying all of Jacob Gross’ creations when I venture to the G2 Headquarters.

i find that fixed axle and metal bearing yoyos compliment eachother well, and id hate to choose between the two. its like having a family car and something sporty, neither can do it all but with both im entirely satisfied. another good comparison would be a solid casual wardrobe and a few well fitting suits. both have their place in my closet.

This is the metaphor I use when explaining my transition to wood. For me, the “sports car” is a lot of fun. Even that being so, I can’t stop driving the minivan around. I personally use minivan instead of family car because I think it makes the metaphor funny.

Anyway, I got my “77 Rules” comic and ProFly yesterday. These proflys are so much fun, and look great with the John Higby art on them.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Yeah I know John Higby proflys are great. I’ve already done tons tricks and created a few of my own.

I have just the plain old Duncan Profly and it is a fun throw, but remember, although it has a wood axle it is not a fixed axle.

Actually it is. The axle does not spin freely during play and is fixed in one position. so it is a fixed axle yoyo.

Gotcha! Thanks for the reply!

On youtube there is a video of John Higby looping with what looks to be about a 15-20’ string, its pretty crazy. Probably, like anything else, just takes practice to control.
