A Year of Fixed Axle - "Fixed Axle '15"

I got the type 10 and it seems to hold true of lasting longer. I’m looking into cotton thread prices, thought about making a type 12 string.

Wood is good. Good luck!

Yes… can I try it when you do? Pretty please…

2 days and I’m having a blast with the Eh. It’s really solid, so a couple times it has really slammed my palm when catching it after looping. I’m still using the string that came with it so I haven’t had a chance to use a type 10 yet. It will happen soon enough though. Still working on my stalls right now, but they’re coming.

I made a type 12. I didn’t like how it played it felt too fat. I’m sure some people would prefer it over type 10.

a little bit of berts bees on the end of some 6 cotton does wonders for sleep time

Not really looking for more sleep time. I’m pretty traditional with tricks on my fixies.

This. I’m having trouble with my TMBR Baldwin being too unresponsive and it’s making looping tricks near impossible.

Maybe you should buy the TMBR axle kit. But if you do you’ll need the axle remover tool.

From what I’ve heard, shaving the axle a bit at a time until it’s at your preferred responsiveness is key, or double wrapping the string (as is done on clutch return yoyos) is helpful as well. If you still have issues after trying this, let me know and I’ll try and come up with more tips.

The TMBRs with the old axle system can get pretty unresponsive, especially when they’re shimmed, as mine are. String tension helps, and usually I find that cotton string tightens up quite a bit with play. But I usually put a little bit of Burt’s Bees hand salve on the string to increase response - literally just touching the string end to the salve is enough. Vaseline works just fine too.

Thanks for the tip, JRod. I’ll give that a go. I’m pretty sure my better half uses the lip balm from Burt’s Bees. Would that work too? If not I’ll try the Vaseline.

I haven’t tried the lip balm, but my guess is that it’d work just fine.

Just landed a clean and smooth spirit bomb with the proper dismount on my TMBR Love Joy!

So happy.

I thought the lip balm and Vaseline were used to make a wood Yoyo less responsive. I clearly have not tried either yet.

I don’t want to make my yoyo more responsive, I want to make it less responsive. Other than adding shims, what else can I do?

How the heck did this get on the second page? Bump for fixie goodness! ;D

BTW, since I throw a lot at school/work when I’m on break duty, I really didn’t want to smash my Eh or Baldwin on the ground, so I got a couple Duncan ProFlys. I have to say, this is an awesome fixed axle yoyo. It’s light, but I have no trouble practicing on it and transferring that over to a wood yoyo. In fact, stalls don’t destroy my knuckles this way.

But, as I mentioned a while back, I wanted to do 52 tricks - 1 each week - and try to perfect them as best I could in those 7 days, so I went back to square one. I decided to start with Hop the Fence. I never could do that trick correctly, but I’m happy to say that after 5 days, I’m now “hopping” fairly consistently. My record is 20 loops, but realistically, I reach 9-10 every time. Then the yoyo turns sideways and spins out of control. But I’m so much more confident throwing that downward loop. I practice on my Eh at home and the results are pretty similar. In fact, my forward loops are MUCH better now. I used to be able to throw 5 or so before I lost control. I can now do 10 pretty much all the time. I’m still not sure what I’m doing to lose control but the practice is obviously helping. I’m stoked! ;D

my knuckles are all but bleeding from some ‘brother slack’ practice.

the eh is so sharp…

Yep - the vaseline or Burts Bees hand salve I use will increase response.

A smidgen of bees wax will will make it less responsive.

I’m tellin’ ya, get yerself a ProFly. It’s $5 bucks most places so it won’t break your wallet or your fingers. I’m not putting down the Eh at all. But, for me it’s the yoyo where I PERFECT a trick. The ProFly is what I use to practice. Which is good too because when I can’t hit the trick after trying for the 43rd time, I whip that thing across the room without worry. Little sucker holds up too.

The lip balm worked like a charm! I used the Burt’s Bees beeswax lip balm with vitamin E & Peppermint.

On my finacée’s suggestion, I used the peppermint balm because she said it was a bit tackier. I took the loop of the string off the yoyo, ran it across the lip balm a couple of times and put it back on the yoyo. Now my Baldwin is more responsive and I can crank out the looping tricks with no problem. Thank you for the suggestion, JRod!
