I was referring to, for releases like the chief, there was major lag. People have suggested several other ways to distribute the high demand items like mystery boxes, instead of mad rush to check out.
Frankly kids, this is no different than standing in line overnite at kmart, only to find that the 67 in. TV for $50 is out of stock. Some got 'em, some didnât. Simple as that. Frustrating, I know, but a fact of life. One reason I never go to black friday sales.
(Personal opinions expressed, not speaking for YYE.)
Well Stookie, I still am thinking âdarn I would have loved to get at least one box,â but maybe trying to get two is the reason I got none. My own greed got me the boot. I see it as the same as a storefront where you get the weekly sale circulars that have the great deals and then it says in small print, limit â2 per customerâŚwhile supplies last.â I see the same idea here, except that it was in the blog, not fine print, and we had the disclaimer. Some of us show up to the store ready to buy and then there are none left, while others bought two ahead of us.
I wouldnât say luck made it difficult, for some, luck made it very easy, and it just depends how it worked out for you. I think part of the idea of this sale is that you could walk away with a HUGE deal, nothing, or anything in between, it was all a roll of the dice.
Part of the problem has nothing to do with yoyoexpert.com or yoyofactory, just âthe nature of the internet.â I type 70 words per minute, I was connected with 4G, had my account set up on here for checkout, and had multiple means of checking out with Paypal, credit card and all that. I was in it to win, trust me!! Some of it was just the nature of the software and just the timing of it all. We all had a heads up that some people could walk away with 2 boxes, and luck played a part in getting anything at all. We had the disclaimer.
Some of the people who got the boxes may not like what they got, and if they bought two, they will have to unload the stuff somehow. That is the risk they took in buying two. Buying two of something, when you donât know what it is, could end up a dumb move. Some of the people who got nothing will see whatâs inside and say, âgeez I already have all that stuff, glad it didnât pan out after all.â It will be a mixed bag, and you never know what you will think when you see some of the unboxings. The âmysteryâ is a hit or miss anyway. They were honest with us the whole time though, and maybe they will consider a different setup next time, but if I got 2 boxes, Iâd think it worked out just fine this time.
Itâs really not like that. Itâs like waiting in line, getting the item, and then at the checkout having the item taken from you and handed to any random person.
People know there was a chance they wouldnât get one. What they donât like is feeling as if they did what they had to do, got one in their cart, and then had it taken away because the buying process is horrible. I could care less about what was in the box at this point, but I wish I wouldnât have wasted my time playing a silly game. If Iâd known I never wouldâve bothered, and I certainly wonât again.
I went into this thing assuming there was a good chance I wouldnât get one. They were very clear that there would be a fair amount of luck. There were disappointed people last year. I was didnât have any illusions that I would get one. If you looked at YYEâs words about it being luck, anticipating site slowness, etc. and assumed you were the exception, thatâs not their fault. And if after half an hour you kept going, then after an hour, then two, thatâs your fault too, not theirs.
I was part of a website and we had a huge sale. We beefed up servers and thought we had everything in order. Our host said we were fine with what we did. The traffic crashed our site. Took all night to get 100% back in order and we had to restart the sale in the morning. It SUCKED on our end. We answered hundreds of customer service emails. We had moderators working overtime on the board trying to do damage control as people freaked out. IT HAPPENS. The people on the other end do their best to anticipate these problems. And sometimes you donât anticipate enough. Does anyone think that YYE WANTS a bunch of annoyed customers? Of course not. Sometimes you just need to buck up and take the disappointment. But to attack the site when they clearly did what they thought was their best to avoid this is just sour grapes.
The prices werenât cut on the site until after everything was sold. The box may have been in your cart, but if you havenât checked out yet, theyâre sold out.
I thought it was fun, but there was pressure like all black Friday type sales. It is heavily promoted on the site that the item in your cart is not reserved for you until checkout is complete and you receive an email confirmation of same. Iâve had items in my cart for days on YoyoExpert and not completed checkout, sometimes weeks. Iâm not sure if cookies has websites save the information, but it comes in handy. Prior to checkout though, the item is not paid for, and it is available to others. In this instance, it is frustrating, but if youâve ever camped outside a store for the first Ipad release or when PS3 came out, this is nowhere near as bad as something like that. Yoyoexpert is a store and they will have promotions at times that not everyone can take advantage of.
Someone else commented about not liking YYE because of this. Not fair in my opinion, because we got the disclaimer, they were honest with us, these were sweet deals and you might get lucky, you might not. No website on earth is up and running 100% of the time, and it is the ânature of the internetâ for servers to crash, things happen, and they get fixed and we move on.
To address other comments:
Yoyoexpert has given away a ton of prizes in the trading card packs. Iâve won bearings in the card packs, and won $250 once too. They do the stick it click it win every month, and who cares how long it takes to announce the winner, they announce it, and they deliver the prizes promised and thatâs all that matters really. There is never any rush to distribute the $25 prize. What is the hurry? Post the picture up and wait. They are always throwing in extra stuff with orders, holiday sales, donating to charitable causes and what more can you expect? You have the best online place to hang out here too. Heck, Iâve even given away over $100 on this forum in contests since July. I donât know of any other yo-yo site that gives more than this one. They were honest about the terms of the sale, and we should be fair. I think there are ways of having criticisms and being fair too.
Likewise, I was involved in an e-commerce operation with months of planning and preparation on the part of the software and server vendors. After the first 2 days of operation the recommended hardware was brought to itâs knees. Web server capacity planning is not an exact science. In fact itâs probably more art than science in reality.
Theyâve already said they got a bigger crowd than they were expecting and they had the site fixed in a pretty short amount of time. I was planning on getting my stuff at midnight but had to wait until 2am instead and I donât mind at all because I personally think the situation was handled very well. They were expecting a lot of people, but the amount of people just happened to be A LOT more than last year. Despite the shop having problems for a while, they fixed the problems as fast as they could and they kept us updated during the entire process. As far as Iâm concerned, they just defined good customer service.
I know the advertised rules of YYE. It just never happens this way. You log on for the Skywalker release, you miss it in 5 seconds, youâre done. On to the next. This lasted hours and there was no sense to it at all. It was just randomly being able to progress to different levels of purchase because the site was so broken. First come first serve is easy to swallow, first come randomly served is annoying.
Also, with regard to other big sales at brick and mortarsâŚusually, when youâre all there for a few similar things, they either hand out numbers that correspond to your place in line so you know if youâre getting one beforehand, or they run a lottery from the get go. ThisâŚwasnât really either. The lottery began after youâve already waited and got a hand on your item. Maybe a lottery is the way to go for these things in the future. If there was some way of discerning who was going to get the items before it crashes the servers, that might make a little more sense.
I also donât hate YYE or âblame themâ. Theyâve done me right too many times to lose me as a customer over a bag of overstock, no matter how tempting.
wow i had no idea if i got one or not after the weird message i got when i finally made it to page 3. But i had to leave to go do other crazy black friday mommy shoppingâŚ
awesome surprise to just get home now and see that I did in fact get one
I realize that I did get one but even if i did not I am sure that everyone at YYE did their best to fix the problems asap. I like everyone else refreshed for two hours and in fact did not make it to the store in time to get my son the nook he wanted but you win some you lose some.
Seriously, I donât care that I didnât get either anymore. Iâm just depressed at the way YYE chose to do this. It seems that if they had an overload last time, that tripling the stock(but wouldnât triple the people want it?), and just beefing up the servers wouldnât be enough. I know itâs hard for me to say this because Iâm not Andre and I donât know server specifics, but really, a queue style is a simple addition that smooths all this crap out.
