I’m curious who has tried the latest in the YoyoFactory line of budget models. I recently tried the Genesis, and was pleasantly surprised, it’s lighter, but I like it. I was shocked to see that it’s only $45.
I had the aluminum Dream since the Summer, and it plays amazing. I think that will be a lot of people’s favorite new throw. The new solid colors are crazy too. I think gold still rules.
So, for YYF metals, about $45, the roster is growing: Shutter, Horizon, TooH.O.T., Genesis, AL Dream, CzechM8, CzechPoint, and Replay Metal. Which one is your favorite?
Tough competition, but I still have to give it to the TooH.O.T.
I have both the new Genesis and the gold Aluminum Dream like you, TA. I think they’re both great. I prefer the heavier ones myself, but H-shape is clearly my favorite shape of yoyo (see my favorites on the left). Parvar, I don’t think the new Genesis is blasted, but I don’t have mine with me right now, so I can give you a better answer when I get home tonight. As for your Doomsday, I’ll take yours off your hands if you want ;). I think it’s the best weight for the Genesis (67.6g or so). Who knows if it really matters, though because I’m having just as much fun with the new Genesis.
Call me crazy but I’m a bit disappointed in my Dream, has the vibe of a plastic. Hoping I can get it swapped out for another and hope this was just a bad apple.
Update: Took a little extra work here but I was able to tune out the vibe. I went as far as first switching the bearing and noticed a huge difference. From there I tried different combinations of flipping the bearing over, turning the axle around, flipping both…Now it’s pretty smooth and it’s as smooth as I think it’s going to get for a $45 throw. Something I’ve noticed with a lot of YYF throws is that they all seem to have some kind of vibe. My Space Cowboy had vibe. Had to do similar tuning with that too to get it out.
So with this said, time to start playing the Dream and see what it’s capable of!
Oh, and I’m sure you all saw the Nightmare that’s releasing on Halloween?
I’m very curious as to whether it’s different enough from the 2014 bi-metal Genesis to purchase or if it is not very different. I know it’s only $45 so that’s not the issue. It just looks so similar…I’m not a person that needs every Genesis and the ones I have probably are just fine unless you think there’s a large enough difference.
The Aluminum Dream and metal Replay Pro are strong recent metal YoYoFactory offerings, but after receiving the new Genesis, I think it beats them.
First off, it’s a real Genesis. Not a Genesis in name only with a new design that’s nothing like the last yoyo you see sometimes. If you had handed me one a year ago and told me nothing about it I would have guessed it’s an updated Genesis with a more streamlined shape and weight for more focus on modern competitive play. It still feels like a Genesis in the hand. You still get the benefit of those beefy rims and that shape which makes rejections and whips feel so easy. The thing I wouldn’t have guessed is that it costs about half as much as the last traditional 6061 Genesis release. The new price point is more than fair as well as smart, especially considering that that $70-90 price range has since become sort of a dead zone.
The shape is a bit less extreme and while it maintains a more solid than floaty feel, you can definitely tell the weight has been lowered; these attributes added up make the new Genesis feel more modern 1A, more like a main throw in someone’s collection than the 5A monster old Genesis with that stability and spin time that made learning tricks on a cinch. That’s not to say the new Genesis lacks in stability or spin time, because it has both in spades. Really exceptional stability you would expect from a yoyo with the Genesis name.
At $45, it’s a great buy. And I’m greatly looking forward to seeing the Genesis recommended more and used more. The Genesis has a legendary heritage and this new Genesis doesn’t disappoint that history. I think the Too HOT is great as well, and I’d put the new Genesis right up there as one of the best budget metals I’ve had the pleasure to give throw.
I’ll admit, I’m not crazy about the star engravings, something a little more sinister would have been cooler IMO. Still, looks flippin’ AMAZING, definitely going to try and get my hands on one.
Mine’s coming tomorrow, can’t wait! I’m not a huge fan of the engravings either, wish they had done a scythe going through the triangle or something cool. I saw a few different versions of the death colorway but none looked as good as the first pic you posted, I just got pink.
This will be a good “Trick and Treat” come Halloween when I get one. Has a somewhat similar appearance to the Axis Pulsefire but I’m sure it will play quite different since the steel rims are quite different.
