Yoyo CAD & Prototyping Adventures

What is this?

OK now I got you

The Cabal, which is One Drop’s Delrin yoyo, has an axle system that is more cylindrical and presses into the yoyo body. It includes the bearing seat, post, and response groove.

Here’s a video about it that shows the insides.

I was thinking about how to make the worst yoyo, I came up with this! This yoyo is 66g, with 21g of stainless steel center weight on each half

LOL it looks like it would play so bad that I actually wanna try it!

You could throw it horizontally and probably make it spin like a spin top.

haha yes it is now a return top :+1: :+1: :+1:

I only printed one half and paired it up with an MC half. It actually plays okay—but not great—despite the hole not being centered and not having any response in the groove.

I’m a bit dismayed by my printer’s inability to get the hole centered properly. I had the model flat on the build plate with the bearing seat facing away from the build plate. I just don’t think that budget 3D printers are reliable enough to produce high precision output like you’d need for a decent yoyo.

Okay, I think the hole is actually centered after all, but it looks off-center depending on lighting; shadows cast on it have a freaky way of making the hole look way, way off to the naked eye.

How’s the weight?

That’s 49g for both halves. Side effects + bearing is another 15g, give or take a couple of grams depending on which SEs you choose, which feels just right to me.

Al Ultralights should be only 2.5g, plus another 3 for the bearing + pads.

Ah, yeah, right. My bad. My weight measurement was for SEs + bearing + Duncan alu performance rings, which came to over 18g.

Ooh, does the ring fit? I want to see that!

No. I’m still new at this. I measured the rings at 48mm and made the space for them to be 48mm, which means they don’t fit. I need to make the space slightly larger than 48mm.

Love it, @zslane.

Thanks!

It’s a profoundly basic, unoriginal shape/design, but its primary purpose was to just see what I could get out of my resin printer. Maybe down the road I’ll have the patience to try a more interesting, original design.

Made a couple changes in the cup that you can see. Turned out good.

New MK1 yoyo on the way?

Yes. It’s a design that the whole team weighed in on, and are currently testing. The goal was to make something sturdy, comfortable, and futuristic-looking, with inner rings that stay out of the way and give it a forgiving amount of power.

Might be ready late this year, need to do plenty of testing so that any tweaks come out just right.

If you have a rubber mallet I bet you can make them fit…
