Exactly. It is whatever is fed to you by the algorithm. That’s why it is incumbent upon content creators to feed fresh content into the pipeline in order to steer the algorithm, rather than just passively be steered by it.

I started this hobby back in 2006 with a Duncan Pro-Yo and a dream. I stopped around 2013 due to life and kinda picked up again earlier this year. If someone calls me a boomer I wouldn’t be surprised. The amount of new trends on here makes my head spin, and seeing how much this forum has changed. Here’s how I felt when I got back:
- Bi-Metals?
- Why are Monometals so cheap now?
-Why are plastic-metal hybrids so expensive now? - A new generation of yo-yoers are being created on TikTok. That makes sense.
- No, I can’t do the DNA yet.
- Why are there so many companies now?
- Dang Kitty String is now a big company. I remember when it was just a dude on the YYE Forums starting off.
- Oh right, YoYoJam shut down.
- Why is YoYoFactory just everywhere?
- Why is every freestyle just whips and slacks now?
- I miss tech and speed combos.
- How come every new yo-yo I’ve tried isn’t anodized or shaped for thumb grinds?
- Trick Tutorials are a lot of show don’t tell now. But I need the “tell” to let me know what I’m doing wrong or explain it cause I can’t comprehend all the strings on screen.
- Trick videos aren’t a thing anymore
- Where’s Jensen Kimmit? Oh Nate Daley’s grown up, I remember him when he was like at my ankles. Gentry’s a content creator now lol.
These are a “small” number of feelings I have about the hobby right now. I met Nate again, and he referred to me as old-school. 10 years is a long time, so I wouldn’t be surprised if someone called me a “boomer.”

I think there is a fundamental issue in that the algorithms don’t really care to provide users with high quality content. Anything that can grab the attention of a large audience will automatically dominate, even if that attention is purely idle (or morbid) curiosity, rather than genuine interest in the subject.

I feel personally attacked but that’s not going to change the large amount of old school organic throws I have because that’s the fun of yo-yos. Every flavor of the rainbow right there for your eyes to hear or whatever. It’s just fun. Dangerously fast spinning fun.
