Yo-yos that lived up to the hype, surpassed your expectations, or fell short of them

The fh1 is definitely a nostalgia thing if you’ve thrown an OG. I like it for smoothing out elements and such a lot though cuz if you mess up you’ll know lol

Lived up to the hype:

  • Polyform A4
  • Luftverk Plastic Fulvia and 000
  • YYR Toru 0.9

Surpassed initial expectations:

  • DD Monarch
  • DD POM_AL 5050
  • Ti-7068 000 & Fulvia
  • TP BGM proto

Excited for that ended up disappointing me:

  • Atmos yo-yo’s, I figured out that after trying almost all of their lineup, it was not going to be for me. I did enjoy the Noah a lot though so its not their whole lineup
  • SF x Zipline BMC
  • SF Motive Beta
  • G2 Brass Banshee

Chief is probably the most hyped yoyo that I’ve gotten that I felt totally lived up to the hype. I like basically everything about it.

Yoyofactory Genesis (the og) is probably the most surprising yoyo I’ve played. It shattered my expectations. I can’t believe this yoyo is from 2009, it’s so good.

Most disappointing yoyo I’ve ever gotten was a Pickaxe. I’d wanted one for like a year, paid a big premium for the one I got, and I loved the Chief. So I went in with super high expectations. When I finally got a Pickaxe it just felt like a novelty display piece that just looked like a Chief with literally none of the aspects I like about the Chief. Subpar spin times, not as stable as I’d like, the Chief profile shrunken down felt uncomfortable in my hand, and the yoyo felt like a little rock on the string.

Always wanted to try a sushi or Makisushi. Wasn’t thrilled with the Martian and wasn’t particularly thrilled with the idea that it was made without Jensen’s blessing but it wasn’t that important to me, just didn’t dig the throw.

The sushi is “ok” and while it obviously wasn’t designed to be a performance yoyo it doesn’t have enough “kick” to it to make me want to throw it, and it just don’t find it as fun to me as just picking up a different yoyo that was designed to be fun and not performance focused.

It’s kinda like a Pybit, just not as fun.

I gotta get this now. Especially a one drop made yo-yo

I found this out recently don’t know what to do. So sad about this

Exceeded: G2 brass valhalla, TP Hades, Vosun Hæli, Plastic 000, OD Wyvern, YYF Turntable 2.0 (haven’t had it long enough but I think the Top Deck will go here)

Met: YYF Genesis 2023, TiTANiC, Plastic Fulvia, Sengoku Ashigaru

Disappointed with: YYF 44 (waay too light and small) YYF 9 Dragons (I bought it knowing it kind of sucks and is a gimmick. Still a quite fun yoyo it just is a freak.)

I try to be pretty careful about making sure I am gonna love something when I buy it and I think I’m doing pretty good so far!

I just added it as a food for thought thing. I had just read where people were begging for CLYW to revive it and they said it somewhere that if Jensen were to ever give his blessing then they would do it. I saw no public collab info on the Martian. I just know that CLYW wouldn’t do a collab on something they wouldn’t reproduce without a blessing. Not a reason I got rid of the Martian, but was just kinda interesting to hear. I wonder how many of these remakes of popular throws are actually done with the original manufacturers permission. This is straying from the thread topic but it could be something that could be considered a let down for some people.

Also, I’ve just received a Glacier Express in the mail and WOW. It is one of the smoothest and most beautiful throws I’ve ever seen. I remember when it first came out nobody seemed to give it any attention. But I really like the dang thing!

I wanted to add that I’ve had plenty of throws that initially fell short of my expectations, but once I cleaned or replaced the bearing, it started playing as it should.

Like yoyofriends for example, i don’t know if it’s just me, but my hummingbird, peregrine and pheasant bimetal all came with some garbage bearings. When I first threw the pheasant bimetal, I was like no way this is supposed to play this way. Spin times were less than some of my monometals. I replaced the bearing in each of them and they finally started to feel good.

Same has happened with a lot of my c3 throws too. I got the overthinker and wasn’t impressed, but then did a thorough cleaning and started liking it. Same with Galaxy dinosaur too actually.

One of the reasons I like YYR. Their yo-yos are expensive, but at least I know I don’t have to add another 20 bucks to throw in a good bearing.

Gotta be the RBC for me. I held off getting one for a little but once I got one in my hand and started throwing it I instantly knew it was something special.

Exceeded: YYF iQ. It’s just so freaking good! It still impresses me even after a year. I’d also say the Panorama and Thorn. I ordered both to start my OD collection, and they are both regulars in the rotation. I actually keep the Pano handy to keep everything else fresh  I also have to mention the Speedy XX. Can’t believe it’s $28. One more, the AceYo Amusing Max is absolutely fantastic!

Lived up to the hype: DD Emotion. Not sure how much hype there was, but it’s a fantastic throw, and for my first DD, it met my expectations of what I thought the brand would be. Top Deck, too. Initially I thought it was clunky, but over time, I can see why it’s thought of fondly by many. Last one, Grasshopper GTX. Another hyped throw, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. It made my “moving house” cut.

Fell short: Shutter. I actually like it, but mine seems to lack spin time and is snaggy as all get out. Tough to pick up when there’s so many options. Butterfly AL. It’s sharp! Love its style, but man is it unrelenting on the catch.

Lived up to hype: Pilkvia
I was pleasantly surprised when the Pilkvia was just outright an incredible yoyo, everyone said it was but I was slightly skeptical

Exceeded: Emotion
When Dressel sent it to me I didn’t think it was gonna be as good as it is lol. Thought it’d be lighter and less stable, hits different tho.

Fell Short: JapanTechnology Shade
Just a mid yoyo for an exorbitant price

Love seeing all the DD in here, appreciate that from you guys

Lived up to the hype: MK1 Dynames. Mark always makes great yoyos and this one’s no different

Surpassed expectations: chopsticks gorilla. When I got it a few weeks ago from my friend max I expected it to be good but was blown away by the power it has while still having a very fun/pleasing string feel to me. Perfect yoyo in basically every way and I’m a sucker for smaller/undersized yoyos.

Fell short: plastic fulvia. Love the design aspects behind it but not great feeling during play to me

I had the same problem with the freehand.

So much hype. It’s ok I guess. But for nostalgia I’d rather play a Looper like i did back in the day.
