Hey y’all. So I’ve been wanting to et into wood turing… for yoyos, kendamas, and other things.

Was wondering what some of you could recommend as far as a lathe goes. Like, what sort of specifications of a lathe are necessities for turning toys?

Also any other advice or informations about wood turing would be useful. Thanks!!

So i just recently picked up a 3 in 1 from tom kuhn…

Yeah, it was a good weekend…

Check out this link to search for a close by chapter of the American Association of Woodturners: http://www.woodturner.org/search/custom.asp?id=1509. Local chapters usually meet once per month and feature live demonstrations, wood give-a-ways and sales, as well as providing a great resource for linking with others who share your desire to turn.

As for lathes, a good starter machine is the JET variable speed Mini: http://www.woodcraft.com/product/0/44817/jet-variable-speed-mini-lathe-model-1015vs.aspx...I’ve turned 100’s of yo-yos on a JET Mini.

I had a weekend full of Stalls and Regens.

All thanks to Once Upon a Tree.
Thanks OUT!

This has been a fun thread to follow. My favorite wood yo-yo is the Flying Camel. I even put together a dead yo-yo trick video for the Flying Camel awhile back http://youtu.be/QuM_MIBchug. The video also a has a few hard to find Tom Kuhn’s (Purgatory/YoYo Museum) models appearing in a still shot. The BC Phantom yo-yos are tough you may need to re-glue them occasionally. I’ve kept a pair of BC’s working since '95. They look rough. Hummingbirds are fun to play. I have a few wood yo-yo pictures out on the StringslingerNM Twitter these include some of the older Hummingbird yo-yos.

^interesting… Very interesting.

Got a No-Jive Optic Star ;D Classic Shape…. Ah well, it’s easier to loop with this. Already have done a full shoot the moon to lunar landing ;D

Just Released the New TMBR Toys Moxon and Sullivan!  They have a really cool wooden axle system that allows you to reverse the halves to change the shape. (This is the Moxon)

This Moxon is a great concept. Imagine a take apart reversible yoyo. Someday soon I might get one.

I can imagine it. Ever heard of the No-Jive 3-in-1? Came out 36 years ago. Also has reversible halves.

lol

What makes the TMBR offering revolutionary isn’t the reversibleness, it’s the all-wood design.

And what a cool design it is!

Apparently I am not as worldly as you are and I have more things to do and study during my day than to explore this entire genre.

on the moxon and sullivan i cant figure out where the axle comes into play. in all the other pics it looks like its nothing but halves and big threaded pieces, but in the assembled pictures it looks like a smaller ‘axle’ area.

the threaded sections narrow in the middle to form the axle.

the no jive was reversible, but this feels totally different, and the level of craftsmanship is out of this world. sullivan, especially, is one of the best all around fixed axles you can find.

Here is a different angle that might help.
