Even the original Duncan Butterfly is actually really good for fixed axle play. Except people think it’s bad because they are advertised as beginner yoyo, yet not really suitable for beginners who are learning modern tricks, which I agree.
There’s the YYF Legend Wing Wooden Yoyo…
I have 4 legends and they are all Imperial shaped. I am unaware of a wing shaped Legend.
They exist, and you can buy them currently.
They just came out
Let you know what I think!
The wing shapes YYF Legend looks good. I’m also interested in hearing what people think of it.
just ordered mine.
Whole-heartedly trying to get back into wood and throwing fixed axle. Its a beautiful art form that I don’t want to lose. The O.U.T. stuff is next on my list of purchases.
I just received my Winged Legend and it is fun to play.
I got my Legend Wing yesterday and its definitely worth picking up. I wish it was a little heavier, but that’s just my preference and not at all a knock against how it plays. If they release it in painted colors like the imperial shaped Legend, I’d definitely grab more.
I thought the exact same thing.
I haven’t gotten mine yet, but I’m excited about the weight. Maybe if it’s successful, they’ll produce it in various species, to give various weights.
I’ve been playing with the Wing Shaped Legend today and wish it was a little heavier too. The one I grabbed weighs in at 41g which is pretty light but i’m still having fun with it.
I personally like light weight wooden yoyo so I may have to pick up a wing shaped legend with my next purchase!
I’m in the minority, I think the weight is great for my fixed axle style…if you can call the way I throw a fixed axle a “style”. I have to say, I can’t wait for it to develop the a patina like my 2015 eH. In fact, I may need to buy a second one, just to have it for when I wear this one out
I am curious with your last sentence. When you said “wear out”, does this mean that wood throws will degrade in terms of performance when you use it everyday? Or is it just a personal preference?
Everyday wear and tear just like a normal yoyo.
Yo-yos with wooden axles don’t have bearings to spin on, so the string just spins on the axle creating friction. You can eventually saw the yo-yo in half through the axle. I haven’t done it lately, but I wore out a B.C. Blackbird and Phantom like that as a kid (I pretty much just wandered around throwing sleepers and loops all day).
Tvelto summed it up. After lots of use the axle will eventually wear out due to the friction from the string. That said, I believe this would require years of hard play. Maybe Ed will comment on if he needed to replace any No Jive axles during his fixed axle year.
I apologize if my comment caused undue concern, I don’t want you to be afraid of buying a wood fixie, I play fixed a lot and haven’t needed to replace any axles yet.
