I voted for Pee-Wee Herman…

Actually, I don’t think that is a question with a functionally valid answer.

You have a short list of 3 top shelf players that are all the Best at the way they play.

  1. Evan, is an Amazing player that always brings a playful, humorous and energized ‘presence’ to the Stage. He entertains with a combination of slick combos sprinkled with Bangers that Never fail to Wow the crowd. He loves to Win, but he Never lets the fear of not winning, interfere with what he sets out to do>>> doing a high energy trick dump to make the audience shout out words you cannot say in Church.

  2. Gentry Stein is a Top level entertainer that just happens have an awareness of every single aspect of stage presentation. He’s got the tricks…. He uses the entire stage effectively…. He engages the crowd as he moves around the stage, by looking at them instead of just staring at his yo-yo, lol. He alway uses music that doesn’t sound like somebody scratching their nails on a blackboard. And his entire freestyle routines are very well choreographed to the music. His mood is always upbeat and he has enough titles to prove he is a first rate Player and not a second rate Poser.

  3. Mir Kim is another story. He is not Evan and he is not Gentry. Matter of fact, he is not like anybody.

Mir is a Beast Level Trick Machine. His mission is simple enough. Get up on the stage…… and KILL EVERYTHING IN THE ROOM BUT THE JUDGES!

Mir is an Anomaly. He is not normal. He doesn’t have to Win… And he really doesn’t need to Win….

He just Wins because when you are that Good, that’s just what happens.

His formula is simple enough: practice a lot, practice more, get a drink of Gatorade and then practice some more. Put a string on your finger…. Wait for your music to start playing and then bust out with a few minutes of Fire that gives everybody in the room a concussion. And besides being a natural born killer, Mir is a really nice guy.

All 3 guys on your list ‘are Better’, because all 3 of them come at us from different angles.
They amaze, they inspire, they hit bangers, they entertain and prove that Top level Players can be as different as they are similar.

There is no definitive ‘better’. To pursue that question is pointless.

Also, Mir learnt partly by observing both Evan and Gentry.

He watched them for years and observed and incorporated a lot of their stuff in to who he now is.

Everyone at that level is partly standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before.

On the worlds youtube video, Evan commented and timestamped every trick and who he took influence from. Yoyo is subjective, like any other art. Thinking a contest with arbitrary rules and point systems proves who is better is not the right way of looking at it, either.

All I know is everyone is better than me.

my answer:
Shingo Terada

thank you

That’s my point. We’re all connected and none of us would be like we are without the great amount of people we learned from.

Doesn’t make us less than them…but doesn’t make us better either.

I think Mir is probably the very best there is *right now *at playing in to the contest rules in 1a though. Anyone watching his 2023 and 2024 finals performances can probably agree on that.

Even Gentry himself went to coach the guy and came out with “I didn’t really have much to teach him” in his video.

This is an abstract analogy, but it will work.

Think of Mir as an amazingly talented Robot that can do incredible things. The robot was so intelligent, that he pretty much built himself. The robot decided it was time to go mix with the crowd. He had most of the moves but suddenly realized he could use a few of the finer points on choreography, stage presence and flair generating charisma.

Gentry shared things with Mir, that he has spent years learning. Mir, being self taught and self disciplined, was/is, a most Excellent student.

Mir, could have/would have learned the finer points of showmanship, over time. But it would be pretty silly to pass up the opportunity to fast track your Contest Game when a Seasoned Pro is willing to show you ‘some stuff”.

Gentry lives in the present and spends little time on the past. But he recognizes guys like Mir are the future and doesn’t hesitate to help keep Yoing Going.

Yeah that is probably a good way to describe it.

My take on it since I voted Evan is that his routines are the most engaging and he influenced people on so many levels such as when he was doing it for the fans. And then also when he became a competitor and actually won the world contest. His tricks are influential, Big, impressive, And since his freestyles are pretty recent, they still hold up in contests. This isn’t on a who would in a contest ''today" battle for me. It’s an overall thing

So what does “better” mean to you?

Better is weird. Also two of those three don’t compete at the moment…

Honestly polls like this become popularity contests of who do you like more which isn’t interesting

Maybe this isn’t a good way of judging it but it’s who had the most impact on me and who’s routines are the most impressive and enjoyable to watch

I seldom quote myself….

But there is a valid reason I said that in the first place.
