I think that was an intentional similarity
To clarify, it didn’t sound as if you knew it because it’s an incredibly famous song that has been lodged in the public zeitgeist for decades now, but instead of using its name you referenced it by its use in a competition that most average people have probably never heard of. I had actually seen that performance before but only by chance, but I couldn’t recall it just from the name/year.
I don’t think anything was edited about it except possibly the structure? I haven’t listened to the original in a bit but it just sounds like a low-quality recording of the output of low-quality speakers to me. You can recreate that trivially in Audacity (or similar) using high/low pass filters and some reverb.
