partly function: i am primarily a fixed axle player and have been for the last 2 decades. for a long time, the no jive was (in my opinion) the very best, most consistent fixie out there. i got really used to throwing it and it feels like home.
partly frailty: a wood yo-yo is inherently more ephemeral than a metal yo-yo. it takes a lot, but they can and do wear out and get very banged up over time. it’s good to have multiples.
partly variety: there are just A LOT of really cool, weird variations of no jives, and for a long time i hoped to collect one of each. now i just have my players. they’re fun and rad!
partly association: this is the weird one, and i think a reason people largely try to ignore when buying yo-yos. i have all sorts of connections and attachments tied up with the no jive. there’s tom and brad themselves, whom i love and respect and who have been so good to me. from the beginning, tom’s view of yo-yoing and its place in the world and its capacity as a tool for spiritual growth really spoke to me. (to the extent i have both a no jive and the “infinity planet” tattooed on my person lol. and many other friends who see the no jive in a similar way. you don’t connect with “the state of yo” through any one yo-yo or another, but if your associations with it continue to inspire you to pick it up…
Why did you pair down your collection? I’m trying to ramp up my no jive collection. I do find it to be the most consistent playing wood fixed axle on top of no other yoyo feels like a no jive. I also have a deep personal connection to San francisco, and while I know most no jives were not made in San Francisco it’s still represents SF, at least for me.
No Jives, 6 different 3 in 1s, one fixed axle woody
2 Plasms, my favorite bearing plastic, will grab a couple more if there’s ever a second batch.
2 Weekenders, would like 1 or 2 more in different colors from what I currently own. One is currently setup as a fixed axle with a blank from @AudreySickburn .
Wooden butterflies (1950s/1960s) love how they play and feel. Got them all pretty cheap. One is a beater that I carry around frequently, others are in great shape and don’t leave the house.
Butterfly plastic, newer mold. They’re cheap, play consistently and if I loose it, I have a bunch more at home.
I bought my wife’s engagement ring when I was 20. Had no money at the time. She’s not the type to care about something like that but after 25 years she deserved to have something a little nicer.
I kept my fav players and the cool ones which sit on a shelf can do so on someone else’s shelf. They went to someone who certainly appreciates them, and I assure you my love for the No Jive is undiminished.
Oh boy, panic buying, my former nervous habit of covid
MK1 HD 2x (two colorways I like, and it’s that damn good) this is just an awesome throw, usually more power and spin time than I normally need though
Canopy AL I think I have around 10 of these? Haven’t actually counted, it’s my favorite unresponsive throw, so I got one of every color, and a few S grades to beat on. Currently chewing on a LightSky that may be graduated to 5A one day
Duncan Butterfly: I have not counted, but I’d estimate around 40, I really love the new molds, and for 0A, these are everything I want. Bought a lot in case they change for the worse or something happens to the molds.
Duncan FH1 4x: The Tyler Severence colorways went way too hard and I bought them all, plus an obligatory unknown edition

I really used to try and maintain Two of my fave’s. One for throwing/beatin up, and then one for the shelf/display. I’ve sorta moved away from that for the majority of my collection, preferring variety as opposed to doubles.
i also won’t count throws that are different editions/runs, but that makes sense doesn’t it? They different! I have three weekenders, but one’s an OG without finger cups, one’s a cerakote, and then one’s a newer run. Firecrackers are another one, different bearing sizes, So I’d never call them the same. Same with my Alleycat 650’s, they have different diameters. I have a docpop Thing, and an older Toybania version. So, while a lot of them appear very similar, they differ. I have a number of different deep/deeper/deepest iterations that are the same, as well as g2 Respawns. Nevertheless though, the Ano’s are different.
I dunno, I don’t have very many throws that I can say I have two of the same. Other people may say have I have two of the same, but they may not appreciate the nuance.
I am amused. There is a yoyo of which I own no fewer than four examples.
It’s the Duncan Imperial. A really good follow-up question is: “Why?” All I can say is people kept giving them to me when they found out I like yoyos. [shrug] Two of them are ones I’ve thrown a lot. I have a gold-flake one that got me through my Master’s degree and a green one that got me through my Ph.D.
The other two are a Glow advertiser for Rice Krispies (blame Mom) and a very vintage No.400 in yellow still NOS in original packaging ($1.00). That one and a few others came to me from a young lady I knew in university (golly, 45 years ago) whose grandfather owned a toy store in Portland, OR.
When he died the family just passed out the toys to the kids. She ended up with a crate of NOS Duncans. You can see why I thought I was pretty well supplied with throws until I happened to look in here!
It’s my favorite yoyo. One softer and one shiny color. The first one already got a cut in the surface when I dinged it, so I was worried, if it’s not available anymore. Still no vibe though!
