I’ve been looking to get my first top in the near future. I’ve been drawn to that Strummol8 keychain one. They have it in my color… Anyone have experience with those, and have a reason why it wouldn’t make a good starter? It’s odd that it’s smaller than the “Alice,” yet it costs more. But should have a gift card coming soon for all those platelets they keep taking from me.

The S8 love is very playable. It is also very undersized, so all undersized quirks apply. If it was your only top, you’d love it. If you had an Alice and a Love, you’d love both but probably play the Alice more. If I could only get one, I’d get the Alice, save up and buy the love later. For actually learning to play.
If you just fell in love with the Love, and you don’t care about getting into advanced tricks for a while, then getting it first is a fine choice. It spins forever, scoops well and has a decent boomerang.

Not easy to throw, about the same as learning to yo-yo with a Little Evil. It’s really kind of a novelty item, although it does work. Short Circuit is a steal, Alice is good, but maybe a little more challenging.

I guess I’m down for challenging… I’d like to get comfortable enough to where if I lucked out and found a vintage one out antiquing with the wife I could work it. My favorite yo yos aren’t the most “user-friendly.” I guess I’ll want a few fixed tips of different sizes and weights, because I don’t know what I’ll stumble upon in the future. Probably end up with the Love, Alice (or any bigger S8), Short Circuit, and one of those mid-range Spintastics to start out on. Just not sure what order yet.

Nice! Keep in mind, everyone’s spin top journey is unique, but I did bust a hell of a lot of tops learning to throw. Now I hardly ever break tops, but I have dinged a lot of furniture and busted a TV.

It does seem a little more destructive of a hobby than yo yo… I’d imagine it could anger people with fancy floors. And definitely don’t want to spend too much on one at first and be too afraid of dings and scuffs. I hit my in-laws TV with a yo yo flying off its string when me and the wife first got together! Luckily TVs weren’t as fragile back then… I gave all their grandkids yo yos for Christmas, and they worry my Father-in-law to death. Also had one whiz over a guy’s shoulder at a party, and a stare down followed where I thought I was about to be punched over a yo yo. I proposed to my pregnant wife with the string of a Duncan Butterfly. It’ll be 15 years in a couple months! I love this stuff!

S8’s are getting tougher to buy since they closed up shop. Still plenty out there, but a wider selection is available overseas! They are definitely worth it though. Dazzling Dave custom makes delrin tops, chido trompo’s are just as good as S8, and Ed Davidson makes some great wood fixed tip - definitely worth owning a couple of those!

The nice thing about tops is that the lower price tops like the Short Circuit and Jumbo Cobra are probably easier to learn the basics on than the higher end tops that weigh more and hurt more if you make a mistake. The tricks you want to focus on after you get good with the lighter tops will make your decisions of other tops to get a lot easier.

Working on my Quicksilver. Temporary fix I’m sure. But I have some foil tape that I use to seal hyd ports for contamination control. It’s a little thick so I cut thin strips and laid it across the OD of the tip to help press it in. Took a couple tries to get the width usable on the tape. But it works now!!

Never mind. That wasn’t great. It still buzzed like a vibration even though it felt tight. So I decided to stop being lazy and go out to my truck and fix it. So I used my vice as a press, and two sockets to swedge the ID where the tip presses in. I swedged it a little tight to be in the safe side. Then I used a socket to press the tip in to make sure it was perfectly straight. Now it feels like new again! Oh and I found red tape. I thought I only had black. Red looks cool for now.

I did order the Mark edition when you had mentioned they were in stock again. And I fully intend to play that one whenever I go back home. But this one is all I brought and it was busted lol. At the Nats, I did have Mark sign the one he sold me. Oh and Dale Oliver signed my Trompo Grande.
