It is rather boring. Unless it’s made by Invader Dust his white nylon strings are AWESOME!

I actually experienced that same feeling today. I was playing with my Ti-888 with my new favorite string style: shorter than my previous normal. I used to play my string extra long, and once i realized how much i could tighten up my tricks, i was sold. Then i strung up a performance yoyo with even shorter string, and couod push the speed of my tricks like i couldn’t before.

Which leads me to today. After playing the 888, i came from outside where i was playing with the dog back inside to play the performance yoyo with shorter strings. Well, the performance yoyo that i previously loved the feeling of just felt sterile and boring. If i had it on the same string I know it would be fun, so i switched to it and it was.

What i got out of this was that while shorter string can improve smoothness and performance, it can also be too short.

But too long string? Also fun as hell, but definitely not what i want to play everyday.

awesome! the 888 is a cool yoyo. Did anyone else see Brandon Vu’s titanium 888 review? I had no idea what hubstacks could allow you to do.

Gemstone yoyos!

I don’t think this is very unpopular but I think it’d be cool to see more yoyos with custom artwork sold directly from manufacturers. Given the number of people who have big collections, I’m surprised that this isn’t more common.

What kind of custom art are you thinking of? Interesting.

I see lots of custom dying and finishes that people do independently and they often really cool

it becomes a cost vs. benefit ratio, and at scale. for example, coffin paints custom busters for winging it. i purchased the basquiat… $90-$100… whatever it was… wellllll worth the value. good throw, great art, great reference… and rehomed later.

i spoke with coffin in a pm, he repainted that 3 times i believe… he sunk 4 to 6 hours into it… i can’t recall the exact time. but, at a minimum… HIS labor is worth more than that yoyo value itself. one yoyo.

also, mailing back one, two… or even a handful of pieces at a time adds to the expense.

at scale, redundant ones don’t get picked up, and more unique ones can be hit or miss. in coffin’s case, he’s developed a market now and can get ‘commissioned’ for pieces… especially for his style… which is quite refined and detailed.

higby is a simiilar case, he’ll customize pieces. yet, he’s developed enough of a ‘name’ where he can be commissioned for custom engravings… a’la g2 respawn… where the demand is already there.

Very upscaled prices are a given with custom artwork. However, I believe that the demand for them is there, and there would be some people willing to pay enough for a yoyo to make up for the cost of time required to produce it.

it’s funny that you mention that. many yoyos themselves are very much art pieces - and many of us display them as such. the amount of design, prototyping, thought and effort that goes into many pieces past and present (some very much underappreciated imo), and to have a precision performance throw can be quite astonishing. and you put custom artwork on a piece like that - these are items to appreciate

an example i like to point to is the pistolero. though not a performance piece by standards today, it is a beautiful piece of functional art. i personally find it disappointing that a throw like that barely fetches above retail these days. :man_shrugging:t3:

You people suck. If I own it I play it. Now Guitars I understand. But not toys. I play with my toys.

LOL. Pretty subjective, man. Interesting how you can be cool with guitars sitting, but not yoyos. Both are meant to be played - seems inconsistent if you are going to judge (for the record I don’t care if people collect or play - to each his/her own).

EDIT: Disregard if it was sarcasm. Can’t tell when folks are being tools for real or as a joke online…

Gonna go out on a ledge and assume there’s some sarcasm in his statement

As for the art statements before. I miss the world of taurbaby, atomic cow, calicojoe, Levi, NB, TaiwanNick and the other artists I missed or were named above.

They did amazing looking stuff but most people just won’t pay the price when they can get the same yoyo minus the cool artwork for way less.
