I have no interest in learning horizontal it finger spins.
I don’t do anything to make yoyoing dorkier than it already is. Examples wearing a glove or holster. Maybe that’s the years of bullying speaking still but I want it to look cooller not dorkier. All my hobbies are dorky and I’m cool with that but I like to think I give them a better image not a worse one.
I think if you play in public there’s simply no way to avoid looking dorky unless you are doing a contest-caliber freestyle. Since most of us won’t ever be doing that, we have two choices: either don’t play in public, or get past caring how it looks to others.
True! But they surely do have a subconscious meter for what looks “dumb and dorky” to them. I’m speculating that a contest freestyle would be sufficiently amazing to push the needle away from dumb and dorky, and anything less than that…wouldn’t.
Oh I know I am a dork but I work to minimize the look of that. For example I work hard to not dress too dorky. I prefer how I dress but I put work into it. It got me a wife way out of my league and I get the honor of being a stay at home dad because of it. I like to think of myself as the cool dork.
I guess it’s what you consider contest caliber. I think if you’re top 30 at an average to above average state contest, you’ll definitely impress non yoyoers, and that’s a pretty low bar in terms of competition.
Imo if you’re yoyoing is smooth and not choppy you’ll look pretty good to nonyoyoers, that doesn’t exactly mean contest caliber standard though
If you can do the advanced level tricks on this site smoothly you’re lookin really good already
I’m gonna have to go out on a limb and say that if you guys look dorky throwing, that’s not the yo’s fault necessarily
If you’re throwing and casting an energy of insecurity, that’s what gonna shine through and people will think you’re a dork.
No ones ever suggested I seem dorky when I throw. People usually seem super impressed, and any girls that see me throw usually like it as well and it’s a conversation starter.
Just don’t be self conscious when you throw. One of the most confident things you can do is unapologetically being yourself. If you truly don’t care what people think, I think you’ll find people find it super dope.
Fair enough. I would further argue, however, that whether you wear gloves or not will not change the fact that “you’re lookin really good” to non-yoyoers.
When I eventually do play in public, I fully expect to just be ignored. The fact that I use gloves won’t change that one iota. If I ever get so good at this that I no longer get ignored, then the fact that I use gloves won’t change how amazing my skills look one iota.
other times to wear gloves are:-
Working with chemicals
cleaning up bodily fluids
wow thinkiung about it, theres quite a few times were gloves should be worn, you only get one set of hands and their worth protecting.
What was this thread again ?
Lol I actually have liked some of the stuff Yoyospin has done. I just can’t get into the rhinestone/crystal stuff or adding little color flourishes on the natural TK stuff. The yo-yos he turns himself are super cool.
Also OD flat thread x unpopular opinion cross-post: am I the only one who has ZERO idea what kind of bearings are in my yo-yos?
I didn’t mean to offend anyone with my statements but I guess that is the point of this thread. For me personally I would become self conscious of I wore a glove or belt clip. I am not with how I handle myself. Thus no glove. Also never needed one.
My post was all love, I just want you guys to be confident with yoyoing, because it truly is an awesome thing, and anyone who doesn’t think so isn’t worth your time anyway
