I use gloves 99.9% of the time. I haven’t yet found a downside to using gloves that has impacted me in any meaningful way, and I’m so used to the way it feels that I can’t play without them at this point.
Gloves look lame though. The word “pansy” can’t help but echo through my brain when I see a yoyoer in gloves, even if I can understand why you would want/need them (100s of practice hours, inconvenient cuts, etc). I once yoyoed less than 10 minutes after taking a bath and sliced right through the knuckle bend where I place my yoyo. Whenever I would want to yoyo for the next week or so I would have to use a band-aid. I make sure my hands are dry enough for yoyo now.
I love fingerspins but my unpopular opinion about them:
Most yoyos designed for fingerspins… are bad for fingerspin tricks!
Ok sure they might be good if you just hop it in the dimple and let it sit for 2 minutes… but so many fingerspin yoyos are actually pretty bad for hops and catches. Much smaller margin for error and if you’re off by a little it’ll spin out much quicker than a traditional flat hub.
Small flat cups are the best for fingerspin tricks. You won’t be getting 2 minutes but 15-20 seconds is still solid and they’re so much easier to do hops with
Here’s one more: if you can’t, at the very least, appreciate everything about yo-yos (shapes, sizes, materials, responsive, unresponsive, etc.) as well as all the different styles of play, you will never truly love the sport.
I get where you’re coming from, but if you’re a player who plays fast, gloves make that so much easier. There’s certain combos that go much easier for me when I wear gloves
I like the concept but I’m actually not a big fan of gloves, even though I like speed I don’t use them for pool for either but I can use them interchangeably if I ever wanted to
I think gloves are used best if you’re at a yoyo contest about to compete and your hands are sweaty. Although, the only time I’ve ever competed I didn’t wear gloves
Just to be clear, my comment wasn’t directed specifically at you.
Also, here’s a definition of the word sport:
An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
It’s similar to yoga for me, it’s something deeply connected and spiritual.
When I throw, I am connected to my true nature and at peace.
Others treat it more as a sport with practice and strategy. While I definitely agree it can be a sport to those think of it as such, I don’t see it that way personally.
Oh I know you weren’t responding to my previous post I was just responding to what you said
I just think we’re setting the bar super low for physical exertion if we’re calling something like yoyoing a sport. You could argue anything you do requires at least a little energy physical exertion
