^ same thing happened to me when I bought mine at PNWR. Flew in to Seattle with no tool kit because TSA, so no pliers to remove stuck axle.
First hotel concierge I asked where we were staying didn’t know what pliers were, but luckily the night shift person got in touch with maintenance and they let me borrow a pair of theirs haha.
Definitely don’t regret purchasing El Mijo polycarb—been using it as my edc fixed axle since getting it; a great chill, fun throw for sure, and have gotten multiple cases of “walk the dog with it!” people. I’ve recommended it to curious throwers irl, and still recommend!
My only regret is that I got the dark grey zip line edition and didn’t get the light colored one. Now i can’t do a half swap.
I use a piece of paper towel to cushion pliers when removing stubborn axles.
have you compare the Poly El mijo to the yoyocreation Five? they are both slim line but the 5 is only $15 and plays great for a slim. Is the El Mijo that much better?
IMO totally different beasts. Like comparing an Imperial and a Butterfly. The 5ive is about as slim as you can get, that’s all it does. For Modern Responsive it’s play is very restrictive/difficult. Two disks with no relief to aid string catch, I consider it a modern looper, I’m sure in the right hands, someone impressively accurate it can work. Heck I can get it to work on a good day.
The MiJo has a wider gap, some relief cuts to make the catch area bigger, Shmoove grooves which offer some breathing room for plane management, better stability due to the negligible width increase. It’s an all around better design if your goal is Modern Responsive/0A
TLDR different beast, like an Imperial VS a Butterfly. 5ive is more of a looper (imperial) MiJo is more string tricks (butterfly). You can make either work for either style, but with sacrifices.
YYR has a kind of polycarbonate sequel to the 5ive that is much better and closer to the El Mijo. It’s called Your First YoYo. It has a more open catch zone and and a more comfortable design. It’s the orange yoyo in these shots from my recent YYR order. It cost the same as the 5ive. It’s only available direct and maybe somewhere else in Japan right now, not sure when it’s coming to us retailers.
In terms of value, that’s complicated because the El Mijo is not actually available right now. It’s been sold out everywhere for ages. I will say though that the Mijo has a nicer finish, comes with a blank, bearing tool, case, a wide bearing along with the responsive. If it were available right now and I bought another I would 100% feel like I got my moneys worth.
@jeduardo is there any possibly that we may see another release of aluminum Mijo’s in the future?
Oh yes please. Or El Tio. Or both. Or a delrin version, El Papi.
Ooo I like el papi
I haven’t used the 5ive. I haven’t really used my El Mijo much in the last year, instead favoring the RBC or true fixies like a 3 in 1 No Jive or a Jon Gates I got from BST years ago.
$15 seems reasonable to take a flier on it #doit
@GnarlyCharlie - yes, it’s on our list. @AudreySickburn maybe we need El Papi
I need more Jon gates wish it was easier to get more
Pom/delrin would be so cool but probably a pain to make but so cool.
I would love a new iteration of the alebrije myself but I realize things take time
We’ve been doing a bunch of prototypes to see what fits and works the best. I think we are getting close.
If you want to sell or trade the El Mijo let me know.
