I have bought and sold many yo-yo’s on this Buy/Sell/Trade. I have been asked many times to “hold” a yo-yo for someone “until payday” or some such future-event.
My policy has always been that a yo-yo is for sale until I agree on a price and the funds are transferred. Otherwise; I may miss another sale while I am “holding” it for someone that ultimately bows-out.
What are other’s thoughts on this? Is there a policy that covers this? What is the right thing to do when asked?
I don’t like that because there’s a good amount of throws I would’ve bought on the spot but saw the dreaded “Pending” sometimes for an upwards of 2 weeks, so I wouldn’t even make an offer
I guess it’s a trade off between selling faster and building good will within in the community.
I’m never in a huge hurry to sell any of my yoyos; if someone asks me to hold it, I will hold it for them. However, I don’t usually advertise that it is on hold, and if someone else makes an offer I will let the first person know that they are holding up a potential sale and let their conscience decide what I do next.
For the most part I don’t really have any hard and fast rules about this, though. It’s a case-by-case basis sort of thing, really.
I’m not responsible for your financial situation. if you want me to hold I’ll hold it until i get another offer, if you’re my friend then there’s no reason why the yoyo would even be on the BST in the first place.
The phrase “If you can’t buy it twice, you can’t afford it” comes to mind. Obviously there are exceptions (housing, for example); but for hobby stuff, you shouldn’t be spending money if you’re living paycheck to paycheck, which is the assumption being made if they have to ‘wait until the next pay day’.
I’ll still hold a yoyo for a day or two because I’m a sorta nice guy, but there’s been PLENTY of times where I hold a yoyo for a week only to have that person back out.
There’s been a couple of times I’ve really wanted a throw but didn’t have the full amount at that time to pay for it…so I’ve reached out to the sellers to see if they’d be willing to work with me.
Both times I paid for half up front and had them hold it for me until I could come up with the rest usually within a week.
The second time I did this, the guy shipped the yo out to me before I even finished paying him! (@d4nnyb0yy who sold me a dreamy…a green/orange half-swap Executive /)
I have to disagree , just because someone financial situation isn’t as good as others , shouldn’t mean they “should not ALSO get to enjoy a hobby(within their means) like ME for instance, I live paycheque to paycheque because I work a minimum wage job and have 2 kids BUT also budget my funds so my children have EVERYTHING they want and need AND I also get to enjoy a hobby
And low key my wife is HORRIBLE at saving money lol , when I was single and kid-free I had an abundance of extra cash and did absolutely nothing with it
Couldn’t agree more man! It’s all about being responsible with your money. As long as you’re paying what needs to be paid and being responsible with your money, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy yourself.
I live paycheck to paycheck but am very careful with how I spend my money and keep track of everything coming in and coming out. And even though I don’t have a whole heck of a lot of money…I’ve been able to do very well with the hobbies I jump into.
Paycheck to paycheck here. If I’m asking someone to hold, I let them know I’d like to throw them cash now and the rest when I get paid as I feel like if someone is so kind to hold something for me, I should be so kind as to throw down half now and half later.
Me personally though, if someone wants me to hold something, I normally will. It’s just who I am, and it’s bit me in the butt. Doesn’t really bother me though, when things like that happen, it leads to even better opportunities and to acquiring something I wanted even more.
As has been said here…it’s a case by case thing. If it’s someone you know, or someone who is active in the community and you feel can be trusted…it makes a big difference.
The 2 times I’ve asked people to hold for me…I was super active on these forums at the time, and I feel like the sellers knew I was absolutely good for my word.
I really don’t like holding yoyos for potential buyers. I will hold for a few hours until someone gets off work or what have you. The last time I held a throw for someone, it was for a week until they got paid, only to then have that person tell me that they would rather spend their money on something else. In most circumstances, I will gladly hold an item until I wake up the next day, and never for multiple days.
