I live in Oklahoma City I consider it a yo-yo desert. Yo-yos are available locally at Walmart, Target’ some of the high end hobby and toy stores may have a few very common mass produced capable yo-yos.
I have seen only one time another thrower in the wild throwing while waiting on the side of the road. I was too far away to interact.
In a yo-yo desert my favorite thing is interactions with the yo-yo inquisitive.
They are amazed and all of my awful failed attempts to hit tricks or smooth out ones I have leaned. Doing attempts while waiting in line or throwing after a run at the park, or where ever I my be public throwing. If some one approaches me, I label them yo-yo inquisitive.
This is my most common conversation.
( Weird by the way for some reason I do not get asked to do walk the dog very much ) I digress
They say
“ WOW! You are good. “
I immediately say,
“ no I am trying to improve but what you are seeing is very smooth missing, I can tell you a few places to look to see really good players.”
I give some names and web sites. May even show them a few videos I have in the ready on the phonecomputorthing .
Then they look at the throw and say,
“ Is that a special yo-yo. “
I retort,
“ They are all special in the way they look, and the way they play. “
I pull out another yo-yo usually opposite of what is in my hand organic or V, Plastic or mono metal what ever I am paring that day.
“ You have more than one? “
Again I retort
“ I have too many and yet not enough “
They are puzzled.
I usually at this time start to explain how the bearing and engineering has changed and expanded the yo-yo ability to play be with a wider gap and better balanced and then explain the bind and how it works.
Then I do Spirt Bomb my most consistent trick I end with my version of a banger.
It’s about 5 min into the interaction and… if it goes any longer and the yo-yo interested person is with another person male or female it starts to get weird.
They all start to look at each other like they have found out something they did not about them selves.
The hook has been set in at least one.
I have given a throw away after such interaction. I need to do that more often.
I really enjoy talking to strangers that are yo-yo inquisitive. They seem to really enjoy listening for about 5 min. Then if the hook is not set by then maybe another time or another activity.
