The 2019 World Yo-Yo Contest Thread

Evan missed a big hook if I recall correctly. That turned a potential +2 to a -1. And I think he tried for it again a 2nd or 3rd time so that’s another -1 or 2. That might’ve been the difference right there

Was Evan throwing the Edge Beyond? Or something new?

Edge Infinite / Ultimate prototype!

Yeah, if he would’ve hit that he probably would’ve won.

Congratulations to Gentry. I love “comeback” stories like this.

Okay but why didn’t Hajime win 4A I’m so confused

Evan winning after announcing this would be his final contest would’ve been an immortal ending for him too.

I would’ve preferred the narrative of my boi underdog Yuki winning tho

Gentry’s freestyle was pretty insane though

Full soloham, so too many repeat elements? Or not enough variety? I didn’t see the FS tho and don’t really understand 4a scoring that much.

If he did a FS only soloham tho I gotta think he did it more for the fun and for the history rather than the win

So am I correct in understanding that only two Americans podium’ed across all divisions? And that apart from Chun Hay Chan (who I assume is Chinese), all other podium positions were taken by Japanese players?

Japan dominates every year, what’s new :joy:

The level of worlds is gonna be insane in 2021 in Japan.

It was the best freestyle of the entire comp imo. But yeah it was seriously lacking in variety compared to the other 4A freestyles. The judging system isn’t advanced enough to give his freestyle the respect it deserves

The freestyle was mind blowing! Colin Beckford just made a FB post titled “Hajime cancelled 4A”.
I guess I don’t understand the scoring either

Yeah, I kinda noticed that when I looked at the table of past winners on Wikipedia.

I wonder, though, what that says about how yoyoing–as a hobby/sport/industry–is positioned in each of our respective cultures.

You missed Alex Hattori, who placed 2nd in 3A

Here’s the thing you gotta consider though. In terms of 1a US is almost if not as strong as Japan.

The difference is x division. Japan dominates all of those. Likely because they have more discipline to master those more difficult styles

Edited: Looks like Gentry is 1A World Champion and Betty is Women’s Division World Champion

Is Gentry’s 1A record America’s best? 4-time national champion and 2-time world champion?

I think Yuuki.

I can’t remember if Yuuki Spencer won worlds twice or not(I’m pretty sure he did, 2002 and 2007 I think) but that might be comparable if he did.

Yuuki is three times I think.

Edit- incorrect see below.
