The 0A Thread (Fixed Axle & Modern Responsive)

Is that essentially lunar landing > kickflip > lunar landing?

Same stall configuration as a lunar landing, but I just threw a regular front… drop… deal? Just realized I don’t know what a normal throw is called down in front of yourself. Anyway when it comes back up I stuck my thumb in the way and let the jojo pop over it into the lunar stall. Then kickflip the loop off and onto the thumb. I am explaining this poorly.

yeee, even though that catch technically isnt a lunar landing if it doesnt come from STM, i still call it that cuz its easy lol.

you explained it well enough for me to know its basically LL > KF > LL lolol

Just landed my first eli hops on a modern responsive, granted I havent tried much in the past. hit them surprisingly consistently, and only responded on a few attempts lol

I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation on a good case for wooden yoyos. I guess what I mean is most modern cases, while still nice, seem kinda artificial looking and I wanted to find something with more of a “homely” or natural aesthetic to it that kinda went with the vibe of old school fixies

Some foam, a cigar box, and a clean tomato paste can for cutting some holes! If you’re looking for a display as well as storage, wooden soda crates work wonders mounted on a wall.

For storage, Hobby Lobby has a good selection of wooden storage boxes with fitted hinged lids of various sizes that could be used.

Has anyone tried thicker string on a day tripper?

I’ve used Zipline Prestige and it’s really snappy - I like it. I’d go thinner though if you want to pull off short 1a tricks. The thick string is great though if you want more of fixed axle feel.

I only use thick string on my responsive yoyos (weekender, day tripper, deep state). I love the Prestige it came with, but its a little pricey. I found that YYSL Ammo works perfectly and is about the same thickness. As raptor whisperer mentioned, the thick string will increase responsiveness and make 1a style tricks harder. I personally do very little 1a on my responsive throws, basically all 0a style.

Yeah I use badwolfeco Goldie locks thickness and it’s perfect as far as response goes. I’ve also put badwolfeco dummy thicc string in my deep state to make it more snappy, and it worked. Haven’t tried it on the Daytripper though.

So on a whim I found myself throwing around a regular ol plastic duncan butterfly lately. Maybe its a testament to my overall skills improvising in fixed axle, maybe its that I didn’t give enough credit to what a basic Duncan can do but I’ve surprised myself with what I’m able to hit. Hitting a Split the Atom was something I never would of thought possible but I did it and it felt amazing. These things also stall surprisingly well I’d forgotten. Anyway maybe the lesson here is setting one’s mind to something and believing you can do it is often more important than getting fixated on whatever limitations one percieves. I think thats an important element of not only fixed axle play but perhaps life in general

Loving how big this is compared to my Daytripper or deep state. The blast on it is great too. I already greased the bearing but after a few throws it feels like it needs greased again. Gonna try to put some more grease in and maybe get a thicker string to try to make the response a tiny bit more consistent than it is now.

I found my alley cat needed the thick string. I haven’t lubed mine since I put a nice plushy string on it. What tricks are you working on?

Right now I’m learning Kwyjibo on my unresponsives so I’m also trying to get it down on my responsives. But other than that, practicing more kick flips and varials since those are the hardest thing for me. Feel like I’ve landed a kick flip a total of 1 time in my year of practicing lol. I really love Ed Haponiks style so if he posts something on Instagram I’m gonna go try it immediately.

Heck yeah. @edhaponik is a beast, but like a really friendly one. Kweej shouldn’t be too bad on the alley cat once you have it down on unresponsive. My also-amateur advice would be to make it snappy and maintain a taught string coming off the yoyo. Let it get loose and it’s bound to bind.

I hit kickflips about 50% of the time after 3 years, so don’t get discouraged! Variable are impossible and anyone who says otherwise is a wizard (or a friendly beast).

Thanks for the tips! Just tried a dummy thicc string from @BadWolfeCo and the 650b is even better than I thought it would be now  just ordered some more actually.

I love my Butterflys, but ive also noticed that not all are created equal. Sometimes you get one with an excessively large gap width and you need to double wrap the string and/or use something to grease it up, and other times they are too narrow and it is hard to just make them sleep quickly for 0A tricks. But when you can properly tune one (it definitely takes experience), than you can definitely have a lot of fun with it. I think anybody who likes to play with wooden fixies and more expensive responsive yoyos should go back and give the Butterfly a try. Wish I had @Exmime 's collection of more vintage ones to mess around with.
