The 0A Thread (Fixed Axle & Modern Responsive)

Serendipitous indeed  I have a blue berry RBC winging its way to me. Enjoy your holiday!

Blueberry :blueberries: is heading home. Bittersweet, but looking forward to new adventures. :snow_capped_mountain:

Decided to put the Buffalo to work today with something it took me 6 minutes to try and get on video last week (and all 6 minutes were constant fails). Nailed it first try this afternoon

Fakie Regens are deceptively tricky and one very slightly wrong move can cause the yoyo to rotate half a twist instead of remaining in the same polarity. Keeping it in same polarity is a requirement to be able to land the regen back into a normal stall. Also bowling throws are always fun

Hey slim throwers, I need your input! What’s your ideal gap width for a fixie? You may have an inkling why I’m asking :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

  • 3.0+ mm
  • 2.5 - 2.9 mm
  • 2.3 - 2.4 mm
  • 2.2 - 2.3 mm

What type of response would it hypothetically have if you are at liberty to share

Sure, silicone pad system

Assuming an 8 mm axle I like a 2.25 mm gap with silicone pads. A wider diameter axle might adjust my gap preference to a bit wider as well but it’s probably always somewhere there about.

Hey @jeduardo, I’m happy to test a proto and provide feedback. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I’d say in the range of 2.2-2.4mm really. The RBC has a 2.3mm gap and plays great with the ZGRT mr85 blank and a thin string. The PLASM has a 2.4mm gap and also works well, you just need to use a thicker string.

Overall it depends on other factors like the axle size and overall dimensions/angular momentum. For example, the weekender has a A bearing and 3mm gap. These specs play well as a fixie with a thick string. It also has large pads and a large diameter.

Thanks for taking the poll. This helps me to confirm the gap width I am aiming. Gaps beyond 3 mm need certain tweaks or adjustments either in the bearing or in the string to find that sweet spot for me.

Double or Shuvit - Fixed Axle Yoyo Tutorial. This is just an alternative setup for the Drew Tetz trick Shuvit, but I really dig it. Maybe you will too.

These really are the best tutorials. Not that I can even get close to pulling these off, but your tutorial editing makes everything so clear!

And a quick question … after all that flipping and dropping and catching, is there really any string still wound around the axle? Or are you doing a slight rewind somewhere that I’m missing?

Thank you! Yes, there should be plenty of string left around the axle for a regen(unless your string is much shorter, of course). I’m not doing any rewind. When doing Mystics, Static Hops, Varials, etc., you can lose some wind around the axle, but you can minimize how much you lose by not pulling on the string. If you pull the string with the yoyo in the air or stalled, it unwinds from the axle. I probably use a little longer string than normal for fixed axle play though. My string comes to my belly button. I also double twist my loop around the axle so my yoyo is 100% fully responsive(no sleep). I lean more towards a kendama-esque style of yoyo, heavy on stalls, mystics, flips, slacks, balances, hops, slides. None of my tricks involve sleeping. I prefer the reliability in response. It also gives me slightly more string to work with because I can regen with less string around the axle easier. I don’t recommend it because it’s unconventional, but that’s how I play and what I prefer. You can do any of my tricks either way. Sleeping tricks are great though, sometimes I take out the twists and do those too…

Party Wagon - Fixed Axle Yoyo Tutorial

@Jerrod you really have taken Mystics to a new level. This trick called “Crisis” Mind Melee, I believe is probably one of the hardest tricks in yoyo. @drewtetz does several combined with 2.0s and chopsticks. I would love to see a POV, or even just know that this trick is possible, however it does require some spin.

Think Drew is using Freehand but I bet Jerrod and Drew could do it on a Butterfly
