Thanks everyone for the answers! I think I’ll go with yye cotton.
Love how your style is both super relaxed and crazy fast at the same time.
Yo i put this on my ig but imma put it here also bc yo, this was kinda hard.
@Overtinkering issued a 5 finger kickflip challenge for fun.
I was really happy to see this. Thanks for playing along and awesome skills. Love it!
Thanks yo it was really fun!
so what makes yall that do choose a fixed axle over a modern responsive? maintenance, feel, nostalgia? the world needs to know!..actually just me, i need to know
Feel of response, and wood primarily. It is also another trick set. But it really is the feel of response, wood, starburst and pads all feel different.
Mostly play feel. I tend to focus on fixie style tricks when I play responsive more than 1A style, so spin time is usually not a huge factor.
now just to be clear you can do all the fixie tricks on a modern responsive, just not the other way around correct?
Yes and No, most “Modern Responsives” are pad response with a brearing, pad response is all about consistency and neutral string tension (torsion) , and some players really like consistent response. Fixed Axles allow for manipulation of the string tension and the Sweet and Sour sides of the twist. Learning some of these techniques allows for tricks that a player might want to exploit “inconsistent response”, lots of nuance to explore here. That is how some players can do advanced 1A whips and slacks on a fixie and still get a response back to the hand.
@edhaponik touches on it here, I always appreciate the quote “Throw for the Trick”
dope mindset i can make my xt perform pretty well but when i pick up my reg butterfly i look like a 5 y.o. trying to yoyo for the first time
I choose Fixed or Modern Responsive based on what I am doing and how I want to play.
Wood Fixies in my mind are fragile. I have broke one being in my pocket. So I enjoy these in the the safety of my home.
Modern Responsives are more robust and are awesome EDC throws.
The both play similarly in my opinion. At least with my trick sets.
I usually choose play modern responsive as a means of testing and honing my tricks. I don’t really watch content so most of my yo-yoing is concepts I cook up on my own when I’m not studying. I want to create tricks that have a sense of challenge to them. It’s one thing to look cool; It’s another thing to make hard stuff look cool. I don’t claim anything I do is original (or hard) but I do make sure that the beginning starts with a nice throw leading to a clean middle and when it’s over the yo will return and the end will be understood.
If I play fixed it’s because I feel like having fun kickflipping
I’ll choose a wooden fixie every time. There’s just something about throwing a 1-piece wood fixie. It feels like the most basic unassuming yoyo and each one has unique character. You learn little things about each one as you play over time, little quirks.
I always carry a plastic butterfly so I’m always playing a plastic butterfly.
I pretty much do the same tricks with both; kickflips, stalls, and all the dead yoyo tricks. They just feel different and play different. For me, it’s a similar reason to why one day I would want to play 1A with a random monometal and one day with my favorite bimetal—I like the variety of play experience. Often if I feel like playing 0A, I’ll cycle through a few of my responsive yoyos, both the fixies and responsives, in the same play session. That cycling usually ends with a butterfly in my hand. I like the way the string sounds against the starburst.
Sometimes I wanna play responsive 1A, just to see if I can get through some of the longerish 1A combos I do without snagging or letting the spin die. I like yoyos with bearings more for exploring that.
One of my favorites genres of trick is Zines. Here’s Lunar Zines.
That moment when the yo hits the end of the string.
The friction of cotton against timber transfering vibration up the string and into my finger. The pattern recognition part of my brain can’t help but translate this into a kind of music. A reminder that I’m on a spinning planet being dragged behind the sun as it zooms around the galactic core.
