Tension Hook (Ripcord +Reverse Hook)

anyone can give some tips on how to land this? the set up and motion seems simple but what is the motion to have that slack wrap around the finger?

Make sure you’re actually whipping the string with your non throw hand and aiming for the gap. I feel like this tutorial makes it seem like you just let go and it just automatically happens.

Edit: whipping is the wrong word, just compensate for the movement of the yoyo.

The slack’s momentum should be created from the tension before the release of the TH index. You can help speed it up by pulling up with the TH. You also need to keep you NTH quite close to the yoyo so the hook can land.

It’s a bit hard to know what you are struggling with from this statement. Is there a loop coming around at all? Is it too big/small?

Here is another tutorial that may help.

From here, as mentioned, feel the tension built up on your TH index, release NTH and pull up TH. The slack will follow up and around.

Whipping with nth? you mean pull the TH away?

Watch your string tension too!

If I don’t move my nth at all I find what happens is the yoyo falls before the hook is able to come around. It’s much more consistent it I move my nth a bit to compensate like I would in a regular hook.

This video is a different trick. I guess same kind of tension. I do have a big look going toward the NTH finger but it’s far away from the yoyo and not whipping around the finger. how do you make the slack go faster?

It is but it isn’t. You are asking questions about a tension hook. This tutorial gives tips on how the element works and how to better control the slack. Isn’t that what you question is all about?

To answer you second question the video I shared shows how to speed the slack up by pulling up with your TH. This will speed and shorten the slack loop just like pulling away does for a regular hook.

This is how I mess up.

You need to move you NTH closer to the yoyo. While the slack is moving around get it in position to outside and underneath the yoyo. It is hard to tell from the still shots, but the slack looks a bit wild. It is possible to create too much tension so watch out for that.

edit
I think these are two different frames from a video? It would be more useful to show the clip. But based on that it looks like the biggest problem is the NTH is way too far away. It’s hard to tell why without the prior context. You can see that the slack is always going to be too small to hook when the NTH is that far away.

Yeah you can see how close shinyas finger is in the video to the Yoyo. Then look at your picture again you want to give the Yoyo just a little hop when you release but don’t need to do very much. Then yeah just move throw hand to its side to send the slack around. Looks like you’re pulling back with nth thumb well so you’ll get it. Very fun trick feels super satisfying.

I finally can hit it sometimes. But how do I make it more consistently? I feel like it’s luck. What am I looking for?

I’ve been working on it today after giving up on it. Still trying to figure out what works best but getting there. I think pointing my NTH point to the side of the yoyo after releasing the slack has helped me get a little more consistent. Also the way I release the slack seems to make a difference for me. Found more luck with bending my finger like the Rewind video. Just some random thoughts while I work on it.

This is not helpful at all but it eventually just clicks really. Practice it until you get bored every session and you’ll eventually learn to make small corrections subconsciously.

I keep landing with this twist more often than not. Any suggestions on what to do to avoid this? Here’s a video in slow motion of what I’m doing. My phone’s slow motion quality isn’t the best.

Try pushing your nth thumb up under the back string and pulling your hands apart a little harder to create more tension before releasing it. Also make sure nth is slightly below the th.

Okay I just woke up so ignore that I forgot what I was doing at first and then missed the catch lmao.

Yo so the problem that’s giving you that twist is you’re hooking the front half of the yoyo instead of the back. I’m not 100% sure exactly why that’s happening but that’s what’s happening to cause the twist. here’s some stuff to try. Nth shouldn’t move at all and it looks like you’re moving nth to the yoyo after you release the slack. Try to hop the yoyo up a bit to get it closer to nth and add a bit of hang time so the slack has enough time to go around and hook the yoyo. Also make sure when you pull the string with th, you are moving it completely straight. It looks like you’re moving it away from the yoyo but on a slight angle towards yourself.

@DaddyOldBeard yo it is just practice really. You can do it like a repeater like in my vid and that’s a good way to get in a lot of reps quickly. Also check out the tips I gave yooo and maybe some of those will apply to you as well. Also try to film yourself doing the trick and that can help spot what is going wrong when you miss. You don’t need to share it. You got it daddy. If you want more advice you can send the vid here and maybe we can notice something you haven’t thought about yet.

Good morning brother. Thanks man, appreciate it! I’ll give your pointers a try today. I saw you mention on this thread about popping it a little and definitely saw alot more consistency when doing that. I’ll let you know how it goes.

It’s funny every time I start learning a hook it seems I land them but the wrong way and end up asking you what the hell is going on haha. First it was 1.5, then beef hook, now this.
