Step-by-step guide for making a custom yoyo pouch (archival repost)

Someone recently asked me about this leather yoyo pouch that I made back in 2017. At the time, I had posted a step-by-step tutorial for making one on the r/Throwers reddit page. The Imgur link I used there is now down but I still had the draft write up of this post, so I figured I would share it here for posterity/archive purposes.

“I was looking around for a nice case to carry around my fav yoyos but everything I could find seemed to be square shaped, repurposed and didn’t fit the shape of a yoyo. I wanted something that was practical, looked nice and protected my yoyo from dinging against door frames :P. So I decided to come up with my own design. Here is a tutorial for anyone who would like to make one for themselves.

Materials:

  1. Fabric: Material of choice, I recommend leather or a vinyl pleather (easier for punching holes). Can be found at a craft store like Michaels or Tandy Leather. You will need at least 8” x 8”. The piece I bought was 8 1/2” x 11”.
  2. 550 paracord
  3. Carabiner
  4. Cordlock
  5. Yoyo(s) of choice
  6. Hole puncher, an awl or a nail (a hole puncher will make nicer looking holes though)
  7. Heavy duty thread (I like Gütermann upholstery thread)
  8. Heavy needle (or sewing machine)
  9. Scissors
  10. Marker
  11. Lighter (optional)
  12. Thimble (optional)/ I like to use a piece of plywood to help push the needle through the leather.
  13. Lighter (optional) for melting thread and paracord ends
  14. Spring clip (optional)

Base of pouch: Trace out the circumference of the yoyo, leave an extra 1/8th inch of space around the yoyo. A looser fit will be easier to pull the yoyo out and will allow the pouch to fit a wider range of yoyos. A tighter fit will have a cleaner/ tailored look.

Side of pouch: Cut a rectangular piece of leather that is about 8 1/2” long (depending on the circumference of the base, leaving a bit of error room). Cut the height of strip by adding 1 1/4” to the height of your yoyo (this worked out to be around 3 1/8” for mine).

Sewing: To make clean stitches, sew the pieces together inside-out, placing stitched about 1/16” from the edge, following around the edge of the circular base.

Note: I don’t currently have a sewing machine and sew everything by hand (which has a nice aesthetic but takes A LONG TIME). If you have a sewing machine, it will make one of these waaaaayyy faster!

I had about an extra 1/2” that I trimmed off.

Use a spring clip to keep the edges straight while stitching.

I recommend leaving 3/4 to 1” unstitched to provide space for pulling the yoyo out of the case. I also doubled back the stitching at the end to provide more strength.

Use the hole punch to cut 8 to 10 evenly spaced holes about 1/4” from the top of the pouch.

Make the paracord long enough for the top of the pouch to open up wider than the yoyo.

The pouch can either be worn to hang long or short by clipping through one of the loops of paracord.”

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or suggestions!
