Spin top help. I cannot throw these things the right way

Okay folks. I need some crazy help here and how he throws okay. I found a way that works for me where I can throw the spin top completely sideways with the tip pointed like straight in front of me I can land it on the ground. Perfect! I can boomerang it back to my hand. Perfect, but I can’t for the life of me throw any spin top with the tip pointed straight up at all. I

t is so frustrating that I cannot get the spin top to boomerang to my hand. I can’t get the spin top to flip over and lay it on the tip.

I know it’s got to be a way that I’m holding it with the tip pointed up. Cuz like I said if I hold it in my hand with my thumb on the tip and my finger on the top and I hold it completely sideways and I throw it. I can land it every time but I have tried to throw it with the tip up at least 300 times and I still can’t land one. I’ve tried holding it many ways. I’ve tried to hold it loose. I’ve tried to hold it tight. I’ve tried throwing it fast. I tried doing it with a little bit of an angle. How in the absolute are you guys throwing these darn things.

I uploaded two pictures to show you the one way with my thumb on the tip and holding it sideways like I can throw perfect that way. But then the other way is the more conventional way I can’t do it

@kevinm and @DaneMartin will jump in here when they got a sec, they got me up and going

Took me a lot of time and patience but their tips will speed up the process

This is still one of the best demonstrations I know of. If you are holding it and releasing like this and it won’t turn, you are probably using your elbow or wrist at the last moment and releasing it with the tip tilted.

Actually that helped me a lot. I think my problem is is my technique. I wasn’t holding my arm or my wrist right? So I’ve actually figured it out and I’m able to throw that space Xtreme I got from you perfectly now. It’s still weird throwing it that way. It feels funny.

I literally cannot throw the Rosalinda. The shape is so awkward

So I still like throwing the other way cuz I can throw perfect the other way and I can boomerang back to my hand. Absolutely perfect. It’s weird throwing with the tip up so I think from now on unless I really have to maybe would like the Rosalinda, unless I can figure out how to throw the Rosalinda The way that I throw now which is the side throw if I can’t figure out how to throw the Rosalinda The way that I’m throwing now I might have to learn the tip up. It’s awkward man. It like hurts your wrist.

But now that I have the throw perfect with the side throw that I do. And now I have the boomerang perfect and I’m able to balance it in my hand with no problems. I have to start learning some tricks now

I tie a knot in the string to shorten it to around 58”. Hold it something like this, throw soft.

I’ll try that when I get home because I do feel like the string might be too long so maybe I’ll try the 58 in. I’m trying to use the string it came with but it doesn’t seem to have. Good luck on landing on its top. It always lands sideways

I love the shape of the Rosey, I just wish it was about 45 grams heavier!

For all my tops that size, my string is at 60 inches. Your string length looks ok for the size of the top. It could be the string, I don’t use any of the strings that come with the basic tops. The only strings I use are the ones that come with S8’s and the ones that I bought from Dave (Dazzling Dave) and I prefer his over any others.

Okay, I have to say cutting the string down to 58 in was absolutely the right thing. It threw perfect with the tip up.

I’m almost wondering if the string came stock too long because I measured the string before I cut it and it was 65 in but it throws perfect with the 7 in I cut off

And another thing cutting it down to 58 in. I don’t have to throw it with the top up anymore. I can actually throw sideways like I do my other spin tops and it literally lands perfect. Now I should make sure that all my strings on the spin tops are between 58 and 60 in because that’s 65 in was holding me back. I thought because the string came with it would be the right length but it doesn’t seem so

I am using the stock string that came with it but the problem is was now that I measured it it’s 65 in. I cut it down to 58 and I threw it with the tip up and it landed perfect but I don’t like throwing with the tip up. I have a sideway stroll that I do that I really love and it works perfect for me. The only issue I was having was with this spin top. It wouldn’t let me do that so the string length was actually the problem. I actually quite like this thing now that I can get it to throw right.

I’m almost kind of wondering though, why would stock string come at 65 in if 60 is a sweet spot

Yea, tops are weird. I throw all my tops tip up except for one. I have to throw it bowling ball style because I can not get that thing to land right if I dont.

It’s much easier to shorten a string than lengthen it. Sometimes you need a longer string for a trick.
The Jumbo Cobra throws well with around 62” and I like around 60 for the YYF.
