Made a purpleheart Blood Cell.
This one is thinner with a larger diameter and a shallower concaved face. Plays well, but I don’t think I prefer it’s look.

I’ve purchased some threaded inserts and grub screws. I’m going to start prototyping take apart yoyos with steel axles with wooden sleeves.
I aim to keep the weight low by using m2 inserts and metal grub screws. This also keeps the wooden sleeve thick to help prevent crushing.
I will also insert the threaded yoyos from the inside face of the half to preserve clean faces.
I hope to have the inserts fairly shallow so that I can still cut decent pull start dimple on the faces.
We’ll see how it goes.
I think that’s a really great idea. I’ll admit - my Harbinger has had a few days cut short when I managed to knot it while out and about more thoroughly than the toothpick in my pocket could solve. Had to wait until I got home to solve with tweezers. Don’t get me wrong; it’s not often. But the last resort of opening the yoyo would have been nice.
I’m right there with you. I’ve even had to cut a string after frustrating myself for almost an hour. I think the response holes just make the perfect little nooks for knots and twisted up string bits to get stuck. I would still not trade my Harbinger for anything though…
I would definitely trade my Ballsy or Skinflint for a Survivalist though.
The Survivalist looks sooo cool!
if i even had an idea of how to PhotoShop, i’d put SW Blood Cells over those.
Made a take apart updated Boon tonight.
The bad news: the m4 axles I have aren’t long enough, so I can’t use it.
The really bad news: I broke my lathe.
This is really just God’s message: Spinworthy shall not create take apart yoyos. Wood and glue is all there is for you.
Oh no! Hopefully repairs aren’t too costly or difficult.
Bummer. What broke on it?
I completely destroyed the spindle lock when I was trying to remove my chuck. Now you can hear it rattling around in there when the lathe is on.
I got this handmade yo-yo from Mexico made out of Blackwood. This wood is super dense. Just to give you an idea, the dimensions of this yo-yo are:
D: 57 mm / 2.3 in
W: 33 mm / 1.27 in
Gap: 3 mm / 0.12 in
But it’s weight is: 107 grams
Holy cow! How’s it play?
It stretches the string like crazy! I haven’t thrown it too hard, it might break the string. Good for the collection though .
I still only want to make glued in axles (even though I will make a few take apart soon).
Glued in is king for smoothness and yoyo performance.
I was talking to some professional woodturner and these guys can’t understand with the glue and the methods I’m using why They come apart.
They suggested I use epoxy. So I’ll use that. It will never come apart.
My yoyos should really never fall apart again with this stuff. It’s expensive, but it will work. I’ll be using it in future.
Collecting wood yo-yo’s is still my favorite, but looking at everyone’s homemade is really special.
