I use a compass to draw circles on the wood which leaves a centre mark from the pin. Then I rough cut the blanks on my bansaw. I line up the live centre in my tailstock with the tiny hole and turn the half round. Then, I drill my axle hole using a jacobs chuck in my tailstock. The hole created help me to keep the half perfectly centred using the live centre.
Ok. Do you eventually flip the half over though and re-tape it to the jig? That’s the step that seems like it’d be tough to get the half perfectly centered.
I do flip the half when I’m sanding the face. The method works well for centering the halves.
I hope to buy another sd card today and have another crack at filming tonight.
I’ve finally decided to make some woodthread axle yoyos.
They will be significantly different to the ones that TMBR make. You’ll see.
It’s going to take some time though. There’s quite a process in making wood threads for them to turn out clean and consistent and I’m aware of some of the pitfalls.
Oh, I’m sure there are many “pitfalls”. One slip Glen. If that’s even your real name!
On a completely unrelated note, I can hardly wait to see some photographs of these “wood threads”.
I’ve ordered the wood thread box to make them. Now just to figure out how to use it with tolerances tight enough to keep the yoyo smooth and not flying apart. I have my ideas of how to do this.
Hot dang this is exciting. If you need someone to poorly test any prototypes, I’m happy to pay to do so.
I may have spoken too soon. There’s actually a fairly strong possibility that I will not be making woodthread axles now… I just had a talk with Colin of TMBR and it’s not looking hopeful. I’m not entirely sure yet.
I’m feeling a bit like that too. But it’s not totally off the cards just yet.
That’s hawt.
Edit: I keep looking at this. I wanna touch it. What are the odds of me and @MarkD being in the same physical location ever? Slim to none?
I think my proximity to Disney World makes it more likely than average!
@Glenacius_K that looks SSMOOOOTH
It’s a nice player too! I decided to go with maple to give you a weight difference between your Boon and Harbinger
A magnetic axle Harbinger. It’s almost OK. It’s starts separating with hard regens. With stronger magnets and it could be a winner.
Woah! What if you use those super strong magnets? I think those are neodymium?
