I love that you and Charlie are just going for it. This is super neat to watch

Yea been great chatting about our techniques and what not. Been a childhood dream of mine to make a functioning quality yoyo. 27 years later, here I am as a yoyo boomer makin’ fixie’s

Love seeing what everyone has made in this thread.

Now the hurry up and wait game…
“is it dry yet? (no!) is it dry yet? (no!)”

Specs above - also walnut with 1/4" oak axle.

Glue holding enough that I was able to take it for a quick test… Lighter than my previous throw, want to say somewhere between the boho and legend wing. This is 2mm narrower than the Yyf boho/legend. Need to get a scale so I can see it’s true weight but plays smooth, snappy, light, zippy. Pretty happy with this one!

Threw a string on the one I made yesterday. The response is great. Super snappy and has some power too. However, I’m not the most keen on how it feels when I’m holding it, and the walls could definitely be a bit higher to help with more 0A stuff. I think the higher walls will help more with regens as well since the string will be more stacked up against the walls creating that resistance on the unwind.

Little bit of walnut oil really changes the look!

57mm x 25mm x 40g not including the spikes

Half ebonised eucalyptus. Inserted a little V into the wing profile. The gap came out slightly smaller than when I was testing, I’ll knock out the axle and reset it. Dangerously protruding spikes are back!

Another ebonised eucalyptus. Trying to go for a high wall, flat rim, step straight design. Some of the angles could have been more clearly defined, but in general I like the shape.

This one has a bit of vibe which combined with the weight make it not so fun to throw. Does everything it’s supposed to, but the string vibe sleeping make me not want to throw hard and the lighter yoyos feel better for flipping.

I want to make 3 Harbingers today. That’s my aim anyway as long as nothing else gets in the way.

I have some maple, beech, wenge and SpectaPly.

What would you like?

I bet beech is real nice. I love carving opinel handles and I’m pretty sure that’s beech. I bet it makes a lovely yoyo.

I’m curious to see one in maple. Lighter weight than usual (if oak is considered the usual) but with the improved response you mentioned before. I think the spectra looks cool, still want one.

Question for you fellas. In order to refurbish these oldies from the 50’s I’m going to need to drill out the existing axles. They are both 0.24” diameters. Is there a suggested wood type you’d recommend? I was thinking walnut, but figured I’d see what others have to recommend before I order some.

I restored a similar old Duncan and was able to just pull the axle out with some pliers. No drilling needed. I used walnut for the axle.

Ah I wasn’t as fortunate as you. These axles are so stuck in you’d think they were glued.

Axle still looks good l, I’d try my hardest to save it.
If it’s glued put a few drops of acetone round the joint, keep reapplying until it goes soft.
If it’s a friction fit then leave them in direct sunlight for a week or two. UV radiation is a handy tool since I started thinking of it as a tool

Even with very minimal pressure from the pliers the axle wood was twisting and cracking so I just went all the way with it.
